Large tiles in a kitchen backsplash?

Has anyone used large tiles in their backsplash? I'd love to see photos.

We are looking at a tile that is 10 x 16, I believe. I was told this would be more for a bathroom wall, but I'm wondering how it would look in a backsplash. We'd also have a row or two of 2" decorative tiles along with those, probably.

Do you have upper cabinets? How big is the area you want to tile? That may be the key. In a small area it may be too choppy.

Generally, i like the idea. There is enough 3x6 subway in the world, for sure!

I will have upper cabinets that are 39" tall.

It is a small area. It'll be the usual 18" in height, probably only around 20 square feet total space.

My granite supplier advised using tile from the granite up (no granite back splash). She could have advised the other way and made a little more money, so I think she advised based on her honest opinion. I also like the "no granite back splash" look better. Just guessing, I'd say the only reason to use the 4" granite back splash would be if you weren't going to use any other back splash at all (a more low-budget option, in my opinion).

With a granite backsplash, you'll still have a seam so it defeats the purpose stated by that granite guy. Only time I see tile over a 3" granite backsplash is when they are done at different times (change in homeowners or you decide to add tile in the future). Most people getting new counters will just tile from the counter up.

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

I like large tile for backsplash and am doing the same for the same reason, I couldnt get a third slab they didn't have one. I got 24x24 and I'm paying to have a professional install as it's tricky. So far looks lovely! Sizing to space properly is critical I found out from my tiler and he was right. If you have found your perfect tile, you can make it work well. If it's just ok, then I would send it back and look at long narrow floor tiles, or 24x24 or bigger to get your look. That is just what I finished going through. Now I'm stumped on tile for my fireplace..

I think large tiles can look fabulous on a backsplash. Make sure that the backsplash height is a multiple of the tile size so that you dont have partial large tiles.

I wanted to use 18x18 jerusalem gold honed limestone for my backsplash, but every shipment was cracked.
I think a slab-like backsplash using large-format tiles is a great uncluttered look (and saves $$ above a real slab backsplash).
