Which cabinet color-Simply White vs. White Dove?
Comments (134)I always use an extender with Aura. It gives you more time before drying. If you're painting a bathroom, research "surfactant leaching." This happens when the paint in a bathroom isn't fully cured, and you use the shower. Google photos of surfactant leaching. Most paint stores will say latex cures in a few days, but I had this problem in two homes and did extensive research. You get ugly drips down the walls, and they are yellow or brown. You can wash it off, but it comes back. Now, when I paint a bathroom, I wait 30 days before using the shower. That may be overkill, and if you only have one shower, that would not be possible....See MoreStain my cabinets light blue? or do White on white on white?
Comments (18)Regrettably, that is not my kitchen. It is one whose colors I tried to replicate, with results so bad (this is how I know how wrong colored stains can turn out) that I had to go another direction completely . The kitchen is by Timeless Kitchen Design. They have a web site and a blog, and even a proprietor -- Kevin Ritter -- who may be able to identify the hardware. For anyone who might yearn to have one of his wonderful kitchens, forum member honeychurch has posted here and on a blog about her experience. The irony is that the photo that so won my heart is actually somewhat distorted from the original, which is slightly warmer in its coloring. Here is a link that might be useful: Timeless Kitchen Design...See MoreWhite vs. Stained Cabinets?
Comments (1)I have painted paint grade (i.e., not the prettiest wood) plywood cabinets and doors in my dressing area. After 9 years and some recurring plumbing issues in the sink, which had some of them get very wet a couple of times for a couple of days, they're like new. They, obviously, don't get the kind of wear that a kitchen does, but the temperature up there often gets as high as 85 degrees and as low as 60 degrees, and absolutely nothing has happened to the paint. These were brush painted in place, rather than being factory painted, but the factory spray is supposed to be even more durable. The explanation sounds a bit made up, however, because paint grade materials usually cost less. The upcharge should be for the painting, but it shouldn't be so different from staining. A lot of cabinetmakers favor MDF because it's so flat and stable, but one usually hears about MDF boxes with wood (or plywood) doors, rather than vice versa. The biggest issues I know of with MDF would be loosening at the screws where the hinges are, and some question about the level of damage with moisture (but doors wouldn't be a problem for the latter). MDF is heavier than wood or plywood, so gravity will pull it more. I'd research that aspect some more, but it should be fine. There's nothing wrong with furniture quality MDF. If you like that perfectly smooth, smooth as silk finish, that's the way to get it. I like the texture of the brush strokes and just a bit of grain (can't see it under the primer and paint, but can feel it in a couple of places). Since you're familiar with, have lived with, the cabinets these guys make, and they please you, go for it!...See MoreNew white finish or white painted kitchen cabinets
Comments (4)Sure, diymom79. Finish the hearsay... If they slap paint on them without proper preparation. It's a no brainer. You get what you put into them. This topic has also been beaten to death and is actually ongoing (again) in another current thread. I've got both painted and unpainted and neither is better than the other, based upon my usage and the quality of 1) my cabinets and 2) my painted jobs....See MoreCEFreeman
