Which cabinet color-Simply White vs. White Dove?
Comments (134)I always use an extender with Aura. It gives you more time before drying. If you're painting a bathroom, research "surfactant leaching." This happens when the paint in a bathroom isn't fully cured, and you use the shower. Google photos of surfactant leaching. Most paint stores will say latex cures in a few days, but I had this problem in two homes and did extensive research. You get ugly drips down the walls, and they are yellow or brown. You can wash it off, but it comes back. Now, when I paint a bathroom, I wait 30 days before using the shower. That may be overkill, and if you only have one shower, that would not be possible....See MoreCatalytic lacquer finish vs. Catalytic varnish finish for white
Comments (0)Hi! What are the pros/cons of catalytic lacquer finish vs. catalytic varnish finish for white cabinets? The local guy uses the lacquer finish and said he wouldn't use varnish, but I don't recall the reasoning. The WM/BH and I think Rutt, uses catalytic varnish finish and they said that the lacquer could get gummy in 3-5 years and that causes it to look like dirt around the knobs. He did say, they could have improved the technique. What are the pros and cons of both? We have toddlers and want something durable. Are both of these used with paint colors we pick out and do they have low VOC options? Is there such thing as a white stain? What are the pros and cons of it if it exists? The WM guy said they use paint but it was sort of like a stain. We have toddlers and our walls have taken a beating. Most people we talk to seem to think we should stay away from hand painted. One local mfgr does only hand painted and said she has multiple protective coats on it. I've also read that the factory finish can chip and then we have to replace a whole door whereas hand painted is easier to touch up. Please explain? It would help us get closer to choosing someone. Thanks...See MoreStain my cabinets light blue? or do White on white on white?
Comments (18)Regrettably, that is not my kitchen. It is one whose colors I tried to replicate, with results so bad (this is how I know how wrong colored stains can turn out) that I had to go another direction completely . The kitchen is by Timeless Kitchen Design. They have a web site and a blog, and even a proprietor -- Kevin Ritter -- who may be able to identify the hardware. For anyone who might yearn to have one of his wonderful kitchens, forum member honeychurch has posted here and on a blog about her experience. The irony is that the photo that so won my heart is actually somewhat distorted from the original, which is slightly warmer in its coloring. Here is a link that might be useful: Timeless Kitchen Design...See MoreOrdering custom cabinets: dilemma re: white paint vs. light stain
Comments (18)yep..light wood is making a comeback, definitely so I'm still in my walnut and teak stage(and probably will stay there for a while lol), but I love some light woods too..maple for example...cherry.. I like the idea of mixing both:) some cabinets are light stained and some are white(or some other light color). why not, if the overall design supports it of course? I think the most important for kitchen is to make sense within the context of the style of the house. then it will always look like it belongs. second most important-that it makes sense with your own individual style and preferences. then it will a) be cohesive with the rest of the space b) will make you happy(you can switch a) and b) places)) I don't get this "looking dated" thing..either it's pretty/nice/beautiful/cute/gorgeous-or it's not whoever doesn't like it in ten years (including you), for any reason anymore-redoes it if he can afford it. and if he can't-he waits until he can. if the kitchen makes sense-one can wait for years. its the ones that seem to be glued to the house, stylistically disconnected, or dysfunctional-that you wish to rip out others, you work with. you like them despite being "dated" too. unless you're told day after day you shouldn't...)))...See MoreCEFreeman
