Sink and range layout questions

We are going to be remodeling the kitchen in our new house, and I'm stumped by some layout issues. I don't have measurements yet, but will update when I do. Basically, it's a galley kitchen, with doorways (but no doors) on both ends. One side will be a large island, and the plan is to have the range there. This will be open to the Family Room. On the other side will be, in order from left to right, fridge (with upper cabinet), counter (with 30" upper cabinet and dishwasher below), sink, counter, pantry. The plan is to open up the wall above the sink into the dining room. We can't open the whole wall, or we would have no upper cabinets, so it will be more of a cutout.

But I'm thinking it might be too cramped on the sink side. Maybe I should have the sink and the range on the island? But then there is no upper cabinet for putting away dishes.

Any thoughts about this? (Hard without a diagram I know - I will get one ASAP!)
