Can I use large tile, like 18 x 18 or cut a 24 inch tile to fit?

Anyone used large tiles on a backsplash? We found a tile we like (modern style/no pattern) and the tiles come in large pieces that we could use just a few (18x18) to cover the space an minimize grout lines.

Anyone else do this? Any photos? Thanks!

I just installed 11.7" x 23" tiles for my backsplash. It hasn't been grouted yet. I am also going for a modern/contemporary look. Here's the link to my thread about my tile (and photos):

Oops lillo, I made a mistake. My reno started on Monday, but moving quickly. They demo'd to the studs. Tub, drain and valves in, walls back up (except vanity wall), electrical done and tile is up on the long tub wall. This morning I am thinking of still going with the 12x12 brick pattern on the floor. I thought it would be too much pattern with the subway wall tiles, but the subway is only in the tub area and should be covered with a shower curtain (if my kids remember!). I took a few pics on my phone but have to get them on my computer. I have planned sand colored ceramic subway tiles with a sandy/concrete colored porcelain floor. Colonial cherry double vanity with a beige marble top. White Toto toilet and white sinks. I originally planned sconces, but because of a pipe in the way I can only use overhead fixtures. My goal today is to find robe/towel hooks. I empathize with you about your tile floor decision (other post). Selecting the tile was my most time consuming decision. Natural stone was not an option for me because of maintenance issues and well water staining. I would have loved to go with basic white subways, but am afraid of staining. It's not just the "levelness". It's the support under the floor that keeps it rigid. Any flex at all, and it will crack. It doesn't matter if it's smooth and totally level. It's all about your joists and subfloor. Your joists need to have the right spacing, the right depth, and not span too long of a length. Plus the subfloor needs to be the right thickness. A lot of time, this add considerable height to the installation in order to add rigidity. Your expert should be fully knowledgable about how to do the math to calculate whether or not your home can support such large tile without cracking. If he doesn't mention or understand how to calculate your existing space's deflection, then he doesn't know enough to do the job. Period. Move on to someone who does know how to figure this information out. Or, perhaps DIY it with the help of the pros at the John Bridge Forum.

You don't get the full benefit of the size of a filter grille because of the vanes - the vanes are a slight blockage to airflow. Of course, there are "low restriction" filter-grilles that cost twice as much, but 20x20 won't cut it at all with a 5 ton. bigger is always better with filter grilles, there's almost no cost difference between a 20x20 and a 20x30. You need 2000 cfm total for 5 tons... A 20x20 by itself is waay too small for a 5-ton a/c. I run two 20x30's, each with their own short (3 foot) 16" duct for my four-ton unit. Even so, on stage two (1600 cfm) you can hear them pretty well, even with the good 4" honeywell filters.

You can check flatness by taking a pair of tiles and placing them face to face or back to back. If there is any gapping around the edges or in the center when you look at them from the side, then they are not perfectly flat. That doesn't mean that they can't be used. It just means that they will look better if they are not laid in an overlapping pattern where you get lippage, and it is important, if they are bowed, that it is consistent from tile to tile. I did a small bathroom in 18" square tiles that were perfectly flat and I still chose to align the tiles in a standard, straight set pattern. Lippage

Great..thanks for the link....my range isn't centered on my wall (photo below). My space is 100 inches across and I'm thinking of using 24 inch tiles. Since my range isn't centered, what is the best way to arrange the tile--meaning should I put a full tile in the center of the range and work my way out or try and center one of the seams in the middle of the range?

Not knowing anything other than what you've said so far, I'd center a grout joint under the hood, assuming that space is 30 inches, so you don't have little 3" sliver pieces butting up to the cabinets on either side directly under the hood.

Thanks for the response. Our wall across (behind the stove) is 100 1 /2 inches across. The range is 30" wide. So, from the center of the range over to the wall on the right I have (15 + 24) 39 inches. From the center of the range to the wall on the left I have 61 1/2 inches. So, it's off balance making it even more difficult to try and place 24 inch tile. Any suggestions? For the right side do I go with one 24 inch tile and a 15" tile on the end; then on the left go with two 24 inch tiles then a 13" tile on the end or break it up somehow?

It wouldn't be off balance by THAT much. You'd have 15 inches on the right, and 13 1/2" on the left. That center joint on the stove would show up more, if you were to move it over that extra 3/4".

Thanks Bill, I was leaning the same way but haven't seen much backsplash work involving large tile to compare it to.

BTW, I'd like to try and tile this myself...the wall is plastered ...any special considerations with these large tiles such as what type of mastic to use? I'd like thin grout lines as well. The tiles we are considering are a glossy porceline tile 24 x 24.
