itchen cabinet color vs. the rest of the house

I'm just plain stuck choosing the cabinet color for the kitchen. I've always loved white, and in or 1950 ranch, all the other built in cabinets are white, but now I'm wondering if I think I need to go with white to keep the colors connected throughout the house.

Does it break up the flow to have dark kitchen cabinets if the rest of the house has white trim and white built-ins?

My DH will really appreciate your help, as he is becoming frustrated with my lack of decision making (going on 2 years....).

I don't think kitchen cabinet colours have to tie in to other built ins.

Our kitchen cabinets are toffee-coloured maple and all our trim will be white in the rest of the house. I've always liked the crispness of white baseboard against wood floors, so I have no problem mixing white with wood.

Here's a pic showing white trim with wood. See the little bit of baseboard on the lower right corner? Crown molding not up yet. It will be white everywhere, but matching maple over kitchen cupboards.

So, I'd say pick whatever cabinet color you prefer. White would be fine, but not compulsory.

The designer I'm working with suggested that our cabinetry in the great room and powder room should match the kitchen cabinet color to avoid the appearance of each of these rooms as a 'separate entity' in an open floor plan.

If you don't match the profiles of the moldings, you will be left with a plinth block separating the two different profiles. Some people find that less than desirable. Some people are OK with it. Here are two molding transitions that you do NOT want. The "woops, what now". The "we don't know what a plinth block is". I personally find that the best solution is to have the same top profile for the crown, and just change colors between walls and cabinets. Even if you have stacked molding on the cabinets, it works, because the profiles are the same. That's what we did here. We used a stacked crown for the cabinets, but the same top profile for cabinets and crown, just changing color where appropriate.

You didn't mention if you have a budget or not. Assuming you do, I'd choose option #3 or 4. If the flooring is in good condition, I'd leave it. There's nothing wrong with white ceramic. Because it's a separate room, the cabinets don't have to match. However, if you'd like a lighter color, now seems like the perfect time to do it and you'll get to enjoy them.

Why would you use the same cabinet crown shade throughout the house. That makes no sense. Your cabinets and crown are a separate feature unless they run right into your ceiling crown?

This is a great thread and I've read it with lots of interest. I'm not as interested in IKEA vs. the rest as I am in frameless vs. framed. I grew up in Europe with frameless cabinets and have now lived in the US for nearly 30 years with various framed cabinets. I still like frameless better from what appears to me be a usability factor, but maybe that is all in my head, but the things that I'd like more information on is to figure out if this is just in my head. What is the inside dimension of a drawer for a say a 30" cabinet for the different brands, or use the 36" or an 18" as an example. The same goes for how much space is wasted in say in the 171" direction and the 143" direction due to the framed parts? It might not be much, but having gone from a large kitchen where I had plenty of storage and the frame was smaller to a smaller kitchen with framed cabinets that has more frame (I assume to save money on the doors) this is something that is really pushing me towards frameless feeling like it has less wasted space and be more comparable across lines of frameless cabinets vs. framed ones where that seems to vary by the manufacturer. One thing that to this day annoys me with the framed cabinets is the lip on the bottom shelf. I love it when I visit my mom and friends in Europe how easy it is to slide out a stack of plates from the bottom shelf and not have to go through the lift motion first.

if you don't match the white of the other cupboards (and i don't think it's absolutely necessary to do that) i would make sure that you match the style of the cupboard door. especially if the kitchen is open to other rooms. so if you have white slab doors in the family room, get slab doors in the kitchen. maple is a nice 50's finish, i think. kren_pa
