Help! When should we install hardwood floors?

We are planning to gut our kitchen and do a complete remodel. During the process I want to install hardwood in the foyer, powder room, kitchen, living room and dining rooms of our house-about 1,000 sq feet.

I am getting conflicting advice about when to install the hardwood. Some contractors say I should do it before we install the cabinets to get full coverage in the room. They are telling me that they will be careful and not damage the new floors. Others are telling me to wait until the end of the job to reduce the chance of damaging the hardwood from all the work being done. This would also slightly reduce the amount of hardwood needed since we would not be putting it under the cabinets.

What should I do?
