Comments (6)Funny you should post that pic today OB - I was looking at it just last night. I think it looks awesome! I even like the green glass! I'm running everything vertically in my bathrooms, including linear accent tile around the tub to about 20" high. Only thing I will run horizontally will be the accent glass around the vanity top, if I even do the BS in the glass accent tile. That said, my issue - as can be seen in the mock up above - is that if you are going to run things vertically you need to have a long enough run in which to do that. It just makes the room seem so much taller if you have that. Else, it seems choppy to me. It seems like the tiles in that photo are actually fairly long and narrow (not a standard subway size maybe?) and that accentuates the effect, as do the sconces and mirrors. A few GWers have run vertically just behind the range, which you could certainly do. But, given the size of the area behind your range to the countertop on either side I think it would work to run it all vertically if that's what you wanted. Comments (21)I wouldn't choose any of those tiles you have. there are so many other better choices to accent your countertop. I would also do that entire wall. here are some other optionsDove Gray 4x12 crackle subway (BuilderDepot) $9. https://www.thebuilderdepot.com/hparkdg4x12.html 4x12 in Taupe (Leila Wayfair) Charcoal Gray glass in 3x6. Comments (10)Horizontal sounds good t me. If you had real wood planks they would be a lot longer than 36" and you would cut the ends. Make sure you have a skilled tile installer who can lay this out first, then cut. The cuts should be in the corners so it doesn't matter. Your real challenge is going to be making sure the variety of designs on the tile look right since you're cutting off a lot of design that was intended to make it look right. That can be accommodated by a skilled tile installer who knows to look for that. You'll also have a lot of waste to make it look right, but it will be worth it. BTW, not so odd to have the vanity in the bedroom in houses built in the 80's. It was a thing for some reason. Comments (6)Sorry but how do you mean, I've got 3x6 tiles with the built in 1/16 spacer edges. I stack them on top of each other against the wall and I get a sliver left, maybe an inch. Are you saying I should use spacers to make the math work? Also the space between countertop and cabinet bottom is not the same for all cabinets in the kitchen, so the math would be different...See MoreAboutToGetDusty

11 years agoActually they fit right into a 3x6 subway tile. I did horizontal outlets and made them nice and low on the counter so all cords would be hidden. At the time I was reliably informed that no code actually dictates a minimum distance, so it's at your own discretion.

11 years agoMy outlets are also oriented horizontally, although I'm undecided on tile. I knew I needed outlets on my range wall to meet code and with the windows flanking the hood that would have been difficult so I tucked them under the windows.
Here's a closeup of the outlet to the right of the cleanup sink for perspective. The bottom of the outlet is just less than 1.5" from the counter.
Horizontal outlets are great. In fact, I barely even notice their positioning anymore. Can't wait to see your bs!
Bahacca--moving outlets is easy enough. You'll need a cross-brace between the studs for nailing the electric box as boxes were meant to install vertically so the metal nailer is on the side, which then becomes the top. You can see it in my pics. Speaking of moving boxes, notice the lack of drywall around mine? I think the electrician didn't do the math correctly the first time. :(
