Another where to start question....
Comments (2)Having just done a renovation and kind of know the ins and outs of the construction industry my first reaction to you gc'ing it yourself is: Do you both work full-time out of the house? If the answer is yes, you need to find a contractor willing to take on the job as well as your subs. You'll need in addition to the guys you like and the gc a plumber, granite installer, maybe a painter depending on the skills of your gc, wood floor installer. When little things go wrong during the day and you aren't around to make a decision your workers are gonna leave and may not want to come back right away. I'm not thinking that you can't find that special GC to take this on in a somewhat piece-meal fashion, because I know it can be done. Sometimes KD's have really good company's to recommend. Just my .02. Good luck however you decide, its sounds like it is going to be nice....See MoreBlue kitchen has 36 more hours left...
Comments (18)Hi, Alice. Your color scheme looks beautiful and restful! We describe our lighting situation much like you do - we get absolutely blinding light in the morning and white cabinets would have been unbearable. Otherwise, I would have wanted white and DH would have wanted stained; the sun was our tiebreaker! What soapstone are you using? I can't wait to get my hands on my soapstone counters! We've lived with our blue for 5 years now. When we bought this house the cabinets were a really ugly bad dark stain on birch, very blotchy. We painted the blue (!) because DH doesn't like white and I though, what the heck, do something different. The paint saved me because I wasn't ready to do a kitchen remodel until now (kids are 4,7,9) and it made the kitchen way more palatable. In fact, lots of people still really like the blue paint...and lots hate it! Very few are neutral. Several of my cabinets are in dreadful shape w/ doors broken & falling off with too many repairs to fix again (wood has split so doors need to be replaced) plaster crumbling behind cabinets so I have drafts through my kitchen cabinet doors, etc which makes it easier for me to pull them out and start fresh. I'm all about keeping it if I can; these are getting reused at my sister's house which is very small; she can use about 1/3 of the cabinets which function well still, paint them white, and still be MILES above where she is right now with those nasty pressed paper cabinets that have absorbed water... You have my sympathies about the laundry room - that would be ghastly! My sequence worked out well for me in that sense because we finished an addition which houses our new laundry room and new walk-in pantry (and some other stuff) first before my laundry room got pulled out as the old mudroom got demo'd. I'd be a mess without a laundry. As it is we have 2 bathrooms (the kids) not quite finished while the kitchen is going out and that is too many fronts for me to keep track of. Guest cottage, that sounds so nice! I've always fantasized about having one of those so that when everyone is driving me crazy I can go there but still be home. So instead I just sneak off to my laundry room :) Anita...See MoreDemo starts this week - good by old friend
Comments (14)LoPay - I can so relate. We tore out our kitchen to the studs almost 3 years ago, and just have it functional (but far from done!) in the last 3 weeks. (Reluctant DIY husband and totally unhandy me!) We actually tore it out in stages over the first 3 months, leaving the sink cabinet alone until this past February when it had to go to finish the walls & sub-floor. Anyway, it wasn't long after we started tearing it out that I had second thoughts, and after 2 years I really wished we had never started. We lived in the old kitchen 15 years, but it was the years my 3 girls were growing up and it was a busy and active place. Lots of meals, lots of baking, lots of love. My new kitchen has so much more counter space and I love a lot about it, but it doesn't have the memories. I guess time will help with that as the kids come home for holidays and my grand-kids come and stay. And the same thing will happen in your new kitchen. I wish you the best of luck with your remodel and a life-time of memories from the old and the new....See MoreNew to Kitchens? Read Me First! (2020 Interim, Try #2)
