Help! Would appreciate backsplash suggestions/recommendations...

(take 2) Hello everyone,

I'm 36 weeks pregnant (and are trying to finish this project up b/f our first baby joins us-that's what I meant by "beat the baby" post below--sorry for any confusion-lol). We've been working on our kitchen. Here is our before (that came with the house):

Question: do you guys have any suggestions for the color and type of backsplash that we should use?

Our countertop will be absolute black granite. Right now, the options are either beige or dark gray subway tiles and I'm not sure that I like either.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

What about that fire and ice tile backsplash? Search this site on fire and ice, and you'll see. That might be really nice w/ your cabs and floor.

And how exciting about the baby! Keep us posted on kitchen and babe, please.

Thanks for your reply and ideas Eastbaymom! Wow, you are so close to having a new kitchen- I bet you are so excited! We just got word that our cabinets will be delivered next week but the contractor who is installing them is backed up so we are looking at the beginning of July for our install. Yes, we are having under cabinet lighting installed. Your idea of moving the fridge is something we have debated over...and over and over. To put the fridge where you are suggesting (where the current pantry is and yes, it is the small white door on the sink run) would mean that the door way into the dining room would need to be moved out. DH didn't like this design either. There has been a lot of compromising with this final decision/layout due to budget and differing ideas. I personally feel like the fridge looks so oversized and obnoxious where it is currently located. Since the cabinets have been ordered, I don't think we will be changing the location of the appliances. I appreciate your idea and actually really like it however it has been vetoed. I'm considering a counter depth fridge when we replace the current one. I have looked at all 3 of your ideas concerning the backsplash. I am considering subways, especially in something light and possibly glass. I think that something larger is a good idea too. My thought is that I should probably determine the counter selection prior to the backsplash although I really like the crackle subway link you included. This is what our cabinets will look like. What are your counter and backsplash selections? Thanks again for the ideas!

But then agin, I think I know all along it's a little too much for my kitchen. Caryscott & petra: Thanks for the picture petra, it says a thousand words. Is spectralight glass tiles? Prices are pretty reasonable. What about that milk green color? will it work? maybe with some garnet pieces sparingly mixed in. I will take some pictures and post two HD Behr's paint card to aid in the discussion of color. Thanks again ALL! Any lighting & backsplash ideas for new kitchen would be appreciated!

I think the large pendants may compete with the hood too much. You also don't want anything that needs constant cleaning near your open cooktop. Are there can lights over the peninsula? If so, I think that's all you need. You could put them on a dimmer for dining. I think your nook is crying out for a larger chandelier. It needs something with height as well as width. I don't see a place for backsplash besides the little coffee niche, but that's so full you won't even see the backsplash. I think the biggest improvement you could make is change the paint. The light tan color is reading yellow and isn't doing much for the white cabinets, floor, or the fireplace. The fireplace is really the only thing making your home feel traditional, so you might whitewash the brick and change the mantel. The Home Decor forum could help you achieve a light airy look to work with your pool, windows, and modern kitchen.

If your choice were only between to 2 you originally posted, I'd choose the one on the right--the cream one. From the photos it looks like it works very well with your quartzite. The gray one is "off" just enough not to look pleasing. However, as many have noted, either one is more difficult to clean than a smooth surface. What sort of cook are you--very neat or more devil-may-care? If you are very neat and do not splash much when you cook, then you may get away with the split-faced marble, but if you are a more exuberant cook, you may find it a challenge to clean. The mother of pearl is very formal and quite busy, so it's going to compete with the counter tops as well. Personally, I would use a smooth crackle tile in a tan/beige tone to work with your quartzite. Simple is always good.

Wow a new kitchen and a new baby. You must be so tired to
be trying to finish a kitchen. New moms are tired before
the baby is even born. Rest as much as you can.

I am not sure what colors you like but I posted some
pics for you to think about.
With black counters you can be creative with any
backsplash. Your kitchen is looking wonderful already.

Grandc09 -- we have similar stained cabs like yours, sort of a honey stained cherry. Our granite is Absolute Black and our floor is called "Yellowstone" by Wilson Art. I chose a rhomboid tile (diamond shapes) by Sonoma in three shades: an ivory, very lt. yellow and then a slight darker tint of yellow. Behind our range will be a thin black pencil frame in black and then 5 one-inch rosette tiles to pick up the black granite. The tiles won't be installed for 2 more weeks, so I don't have any pictures yet. I found selecting the backsplash the most mind-bogling task of all decisions I had to make. I took a sample of a cabinet door and a floor tile to a tile store and had an appointment with a designer. After 1 1/2 hrs. I had my tiles selected. I really needed someone who does this daily and could point me in the right direction. I think the backsplash is so close to eye-level I just didn't want to make a mistake. Enjoy the arrival of the baby, and if you don't have your backsplash installed--so what!!!
