I don't like them, myself. But I don't know if I'd say tacky.

Not my personal taste nor appropriate to my kitchen, I don't think. --I don't need a label on the door and like a simpler, cleaner look, and a consistency with the rest of the doors in the house. But others love them and they can suit certain styles of kitchens...and are fine with me in pretty much any kitchen where the cook will love it! :-)

it's a matter of personal opinion. though not my taste, i wouldn't go so far as to say "tacky"; that would be any hotel in vegas.

I like them when appropriate to the style of the kitchen. In a country-style kitchen, they fit. I don't think that I'd care for them much in a kitchen of a different style. I wouldn't use the word "tacky," but there's definitely a bordering-on-kitschiness to those doors that works great in a country style, not so much in others.

I love them. Just about everyone who has seen my kitchen loves my pantry door. Sorry the pic is kind of fuzzy and dark......

It's not like putting fuzzy wallpaper on your walls, it's a definite matter of taste. It's not what I would choose, I'm generally not a fan of labeling things throughout the house unless it's a vintage flour bin. However, it's definitely been in kitchens that I've loved (like ccoomb1's kitchen above!).

I'm neutral on the question and don't think it is necessarily "tacky" or "nice". It all depends on the kitchen and the overall vibe. In ccoombs1's kitchen it looks great! I probably would prefer plain glass or frosted glass for a pantry in my own kitchen. But I might fully appreciate the fun and cute factor of the labelled door in a friend's kitchen. Certainly it is not "tacky". "Cute," perhaps.

I don't think they are tacky, but I don't plan on using one on my pantry. I am still trying to figure it out. I think I am going to go with a cherry door that has a rain glass or some type of glass you can't see thru. I don't want a door that has any writing on it even though it wouldn't necessarily look out of place in my kitchen.

I don't think it is tacky...it is just personal choice. I would say go with what you like...

Oooh! I wanted to get a half lite obscured glass for the door leading from the kithchen to the laundry room that said "Principal's Office" (don't ask my why...I have no logical answer)...but the door is not a standard width (it's too skinny) and I can't get any glass in it..well, nothing substantial enough for my taste.

I think it could be fun...but it is *your* pantry door. What do you think?

I'm thinking of getting one for my laundry room, just because I want something different. My kitchen, No, only becasue I dont'think it would go with my plan of a tuscan style kitchen.

Heh, I'm kind of with sabjimata on this one. I would totally want an office door with some obscure law firms name and telephone number in gold leaf on the door. I think a pantry door with frosted glass that says pantry is kind of great in the right casual setting. Further a laundromat sign (particularly the right kind of antique / tin / something) would be just fine by me. It's not high end elegance, but those are words I don't ever want associated with my dwelling. Granted I could probably only convince my wife of the pantry door, the others she would likely deem too odd. We're a good balance.

It depends on the style of the kitchen. Several of our members have them and they don't look tacky! In those kitchens. In others, it could look dumb. It's no different from Victorian era flour crocks that say "flour". Good in some places, tacky in others. Don't let anyone else be the arbiter of your taste. If you all like it (the people who will be living with it), who else are you trying to impress?

I don't know Sabjimata. But I also like the Victorian flour pots that say flour. Maybe I'm tacky? Or kitchsy? Eh, I'm okay with this. But maybe I should mention that when giving others my opinion... too bad gardenweb isn't more robust, they could tag users with style words and do a netflix like rating of this person agrees with your style x% of the time. I think I would tend to rate kind of low on that scale :) But at least it serves as a warning.

I think it can be very charming and appropriate given the right kitchen. I wouldn't like a door that says "pantry" for me personally, but then again, I like the vintage/retro tin or wooden "laundry" signs okay. Go figure. :)

Tacky is really in the eye of the beholder; I think few things are truly universally tacky. So - go with what you love!

I think it depends on the kitchen.

I recently looked at a very large house (I was walking by, it was a real estate open house and I am nosy.) 1820s, Federal/Greek Revival transitional, 5 working fireplaces, lots of original detail, $900,000.

It had obviously had a lot of work (some of which I really didn't like, but I digress)...it clearly had been a boarding house at some point and in each ell (the skinny part of the back wing with the curved wall and oval window--urban dwellers in 18th/19th c. cities will know)--in each ell there was a toilet and sink.

On the door outside of each one, there was an embossed enameled sign that said TOILET, that was probably from the late 19th or early 20th c. I think this could look silly or pretentious in a different house, but it was part of the fabric of this one, and I am glad they kept it even as they restored the rest of the house.

That is a very long winded way of reiterating that...it depends on the kitchen. If your kitchen Looks like it *should have an etched glass door that says "Pantry" go for it. If it is a detail that seems tacked on, don't.

I agree they can work for the look of a country kitchen. I'd prefer two small french doors or something with frosted glass, though.

I found old original doors upstairs in the machine shed. One of them was the old kitchen door. It is now back on the kitchen door and the "new" modern door is in the machine shed. I went to a guy who takes down buildings and sells the good stuff to find the second door I need. I wish I would have thought to ask him if he had any doors with writing on the glass; I only asked for glass. Next time. Archetectual salvage is a good business to be in around here.
