The reason for our reno was all the appliances were giving up and all at the same time. We'd just replaced the dishwasher a couple years before so we kept it but had a custom panel made so it blends better in even though the original DW was supposedly unable to get a panel - amazing what a custom cabinet shop can do.

Keep in mind that not all wall ovens have the same specs. Our cabs were built for Miele DO and when we thought we may have to switch brands, nothing else would have fit height-wise. SO when planning - gets more filler then you think you will need.

I kept everything except wall oven. It was the only appliance that I'd never replaced yet. Everything else was just a few years old, working fine and looked good. The only thing I wish I'd done different maybe was get rid of the trash compactor and put another kind of bin in that space. But we recycle and take garbage out more than once/day so it's no big deal.

I kept the dishwasher. It was fine!

We're keeping our frig. It works fine, so it seems wasteful to buy a new one. It's a clunky deep one -- when it gives out I'd like to replace it with a cabinet depth one. The other appliances were avocado and very old looking and the cooktop barely functioned. When the wall oven died, that was the motivation to replace both with a range, even tho we're not ready to remodel yet. Then the dishwasher went... Yes, it's definitely time to renovate!

We are keeping our 10 year old fridge. We have never had a repair problem wtih it, so I just cant think of a good reason to pitch it. All of our applicances are white so they match close enough.

The dishwasher is only 1 year old so that will stay also. The stove died just as we were planning our renovation so we just purchased a new one.

We are keeping our fridge and range and replacing the DW and MW. I am getting a 'hole' for the fridge larger than this one in anticipation of upgrading some day...soon? Keep in mind, though, our present fridge is only 30"!! The hole will be 36". It will probably look funny, but I want to have options when this one eventually dies! The DW and MW are the only things we haven't replaced, so they are going. I'm not a big appliance fanatic and DH went out and got the range and fridge when we needed new. After this remodel and everything I've learned and seen on this forum...never again!!

Our plan was to keep everything except the OTR microwave which I hate and have never used...it's our breadbox.

However, the current microwave did not fit in the new microwave cabinet so I had to get a new smaller one.

We kept the disposal. LOL We had to replace that when we bought the house, but everything else was nearly 20 years old and dead or dying. If it's good and a standard size (ffridge or DW), I wouldn't hesitate. Other appliances I would be concerned about havinbg to replace in a few years and having a hole the wrong size.

Originally I thought I would keep my appliances in order to economize--fridge, range and microwave are less than 6 years old; and the dishwasher is only 3 years old. But then as I started actually picking out things--cabinets, granite, etc--I just knew I had to go for new stainless. Mine were white and just would not look good with cherry cabinets and dark granite. I did manage to find "homes" for everything except the range. Just told the recipients--all friends--that they have to invite me for dinner once in a while during the renovation. Demolition starts Monday!

we kept our fridge and d/w. both were just a few years old and working fine, so I see no reason to spend money to replace something that we just bought.

that said, when they wear out, they will be replaced with slightly more upscale models:)

I am keeping all my appliances. The range and OTR microwave were actually installed almost 10 years ago and the dishwasher and fridge are about 8 years old.
The way I see it, I can replace them at any time - they are all standard sizes and since none have given me any problems, I figure why mess with a good thing? If they start to break down, I will deal with it then. They are all white, and I would probably though not definitely replace them with new white. I have not looked into the counter depth fridges, but would definitely be interested in that. I did not replace my counteres either, and got the granite installed yesterday. I was afraid that the appliances might really look tired with the new granite etc,but I think they look fine.

I'm living in a 1988 golden oak kitchen with laminate green counters, a huge 6ft x 8ft fluorescent light fixture/drop ceiling space and all original appliances. Obviously in desperate need of updating! We cant afford to do cabinet, counters, lighting and appliance replacement at the same time so since the appliances were on their last legs (with exception of Dishwasher) we decided to get a new fridge, range and microwave for now, save, save, save and get cabinets, counters and lighting later - probably 6 to 12 months from now depending on how quickly we can save.
I figured that I can live with this kitchen for a while, so long as I have good appliances to use!

OH our garbage disposal was broken too so we replaced with a new insinkerator evolution compact. We used the old insinkerator drain cover and saved the new one for when we get a new sink. SUCH a cool garbage disposal. QUIET!

I think our approach is good for us, because we're paying for this with cash from savings. Also, we know exactly which appliances (and therefore their dimensions) we'll be using with the new cabinets. It'll just be important that the appliances don't get damaged during renovation time.

We kept: refrigerator and D/W.

We got rid of: dual oven range circa 1979. (Renovation was last summer/fall.)

Reasoning: The refrigerator was about 14 years old and running well. It's a standard size, but when we do HAVE to replace it, it may be for a slightly smaller one, as we are getting to be empty-nesters. Talking to our favorite appliance repair guys, who know what's good and what's not, they both said, "stay with what you've got."

The dishwasher is about 10 years old. At the time, it was leaking slightly but that was because it needed a new seal. For us, the price of the new seal and repair vs. a new machine meant the difference in what we could get for countertops in the new kitchen. It's a standard-sized D/W, and both appliance guys and contractor stated that it would be a simple matter to slide the old D/W out someday and put a new one in. We'll do that, probably a year or two down the line.

The range HAD to go. One of the ovens had two small fires in it and couldn't be used above 350F. And forget trying to bake cookies in it! Two of the burners were about goners, the timer/clock hadn't worked in years, and the light fixture was almost a goner. I was about the last in the neighborhood to get rid of the Gaffers & Sattler range.

The microwave was a countertop model. It's sitting in the garage. When DD#2 moves out, it's to be her first MW.

We kept our white fridge which was only 2-3 years old. My Mom, a depression baby was surprised we didn't get a new one- that surprised me! Funny, when we replaced the previous fridge this one seemed huge, now, I sort of regret not having a larger fridge (how can than be, since both kids are now gone?)- but I don't know which cupboards/pantry I would have been willing to give up to gain the space... So, since it was white, all new appliances were white, talk about feeling like a second-class citizen while appliance shopping...

Looking back, keeping the old fridge probably saved us tons, didn't get gargantuan new fridge that really why would two empty-nesters need one? Saved us from societal pressure to get SS, which I think I would regret as the fingerprint/scratching issue would be a problem for me. So, I'm happy with my choice, only have slight twinge when I see shiny new SS in GW finished kitchen pics...:>)

My plan is to keep all the appliances that are working well, even if they don't "match". That means my fridge and microwave only. My cooktop is a continual source of annoyance, and is one of my principal justifications for a new kitchen (that and the cupboard doors that regularly fall off...) The oven, like the cooktop, is 18 yrs old. It was working pretty well until a few weeks ago, when a broiler element cratered, but both pieces are going to be replaced with a one-piece range. Our dishwasher is only 4 yrs old, but is also annoying. It wasn't cheap, but has NEVER got teacups clean, and its pump died within months of its warranty expiration.

The new appliances I have tentatively chosen are all different brands, but will be as uniform in colour/style as can be reasonably achieved. As others have mentioned, we'll leave big enough spaces in the cabinetry to hold standard size replacements, assuming we can guess what those will be in the future.

We kept our 15-year old built in fridge, had it inspected and serviced, new cabinet fronts built for it. It died 2 months after re-installation. Trying to save us money cost us as the old cabinet fronts didn't fit on the new fridge. :-(

We kept the fridge, because it suit us fine and still looks good to us. We went with OTR MW as a space saver (there was no way to vent to the outside anyway), new range (old oven didn't work anymore!) and new DW was a splurge to get a panel DW.

I can speak only generically, not knowing what you have or what you might buy to replace it. It is the case that older refrigerators are energy hogs, and you might find that a new one could actually be a cost-effective move. Just something to think about.

Kept the wall oven, which was only about five years old. Loved it then; love it now.
