Butcher block with undermount farm sink??? Possible??

Is it possible to do a butcherblock counter with an undermount farm sink? KD says no that it wil void the warranty on a Boos. Any thoughts on how this set-up would be with a good sealer?

I find it funny that people say this all the time, and yet if you go to Europe, every last kitchen has this set-up and some of them are decades old. Yes, you'll get weathering of the wood, even if it's well sealed, and it needs to be done properly. Yes, it might invalidate the Boos warranty, but how often do they even get a warranty claim? I doubt it's often. The stuff is pretty hard and stable.

I wished I thought to ask about this earlier... before we started the renovation. I wanted a butcher block next to my stove top but decided not to go with it because of the prep-sink in that counter. Since then, I've seen so many pictures of undermount sink in butcherblock countertop in magazines!

I'm not talking from experience but I wonder if the sealants are good enough now so that it wouldn't be an issue.

We have an 1840 farmhouse kitchen with wood countertops everywhere. We have black Waterloxed countertops on the perimeter with a 36" undermount farmhouse sink, and natural Watco'ed beech on the island with a 24" undermount prep sink, and have had absolutely no problems with damage from splashes, standing water, stains, you name it. Our kitchen gets regular hard use from multiple cooks, and it's doing great. So if a wood countertop and traditional undermount sink fits with your period home and design aesthetic, why try to force something else? We have that set up in two different locations with two different wood finishes, and it doesn't cause us a minute's heartburn. If you want to do the farmhouse sink undermounted with the backsplash, it's unorthodox, but you probably can (with a flexible and competent woodworker on board). The fussy part is going to be the countertop cuts at the back corners of the sink. They'll have to curve pretty exactly around the backsplash to come straight out along the sides, and be well caulked. It can be done, and of course, if you want to spend the time and money to have it done, it's your choice. But if your only motivation for the unorthodox choice is the durability of the wood countertops, I'd say don't worry about it , get the traditional wood countertops and plain farmhouse sink, and spend your money on something else totally fantastic.

We put a drop-in Silgranit sink in soapstone at our last house and not one of the 100 people that came to the open house or any of the 10 that tried to outbid each other commented on it. The kitchen was a (tiny) total DIY project that we intended to live in for a while, until an ultrasound showed that we needed a bigger house. :) I was a bit concerned when all the comps with updates had undermounts and I know that some people fixate on that as being "high end" but it didn't affect our sale at all. Butcher block, like soapstone, has a more rustic (not sure that's exactly the word I'm looking for) feel to me and I doubt that anyone who finds the look appealing would discount the value of a wonderful sink and well thought out kitchen. We're now back to square one in the new house and I'm not totally convinced that we need to attempt a DIY undermount in soapstone/Silgranit this time. Though, I do have a sink in mind that has to be undermounted so we may not have a choice in the matter.

I purchased my IKEA butcher block countertops about 10 years ago and stored them for a couple more years before install. They had changed sizes and had the original size for 80% off and I couldn't resist a bargain. A few years later I picked up a Herbeau fireclay sink for $40 at ReStore and decided it was time to tackle my kitchen update. I finished the countertops with multiple coats of pure tung oil over a couple of weeks. Shortly after that, my hubby and I went on vacation and had a friend's girlfriend stay with the children for a week. I returned to find that she had used a dishtowel laid on the countertop to drain handwashed dishes. The water sitting on the countertop soaked through the finish and damaged the counter. Over the years since, we have had several more instances of damage and now have a split beside the sink. When we initially installed the counter, we were most concerned about the seam we needed several inches from the sink. We ended up using an epoxy product and the seam has been the most successful part of the installation. In summary, I won't use IKEA butcherblock again. The quality of the wood just doesn't meet my quality standards with too many knots, and uneven pieces. I also wouldn't use any butcherblock near water because I don't want to have to worry about a visitor or cleaner damaging the surface accidentally. I'm planning to use either Corian or a stone remnant for my laundry room remodel.

$200 for walnut counters for the whole kitchen??!!! Wow. I would have jumped on it, too. We just did maple counters at our lake house and I felt we got a good deal at about $700. We did an overmount sink, but still looked into finishes pretty carefully. I found that Waterlox and Good Stuff for Wood were the most/best recommended products here. Neither of these are available in my city. We ended up using Watco's Butcher Block finish. Our sink was just installed a few months ago, so I can't say how it is working, but the finish is very hard and water beads on it - even when left for awhile. We have had wormy maple on our island counter in our main residence for 5 years, but there is no sink. We tried a variety of finishes on it including a mix of oil and wax from Boos. This had to be re-applied often (we did it monthly, but it could have easily been done weekly). It kept it from drying out, but was not protection from water or staining. We also tried Osmos. This gave it a little bit of protection, but not much and also needed to be re-applied about every 6 months to a year. We currently have Watco on it and it has held up well. We did 5 coats initially and after a couple years, I feel it needs another coat (but this is easily done). If you prefer a poly finish, we used Old Master's wipe on poly on our old oak farmhouse kitchen table. It got lots of use as it was in the middle of our kitchen and this held up really well. I debated using this on our new maple counters, but felt that I wanted something that sunk in more rather than sitting on top like a poly. I am not an expert, but the above has been my experience. I tried unsuccessfully to talk my GC into undermounting my prep sink in my butcherblock island (from Grothouse Lumber). He just wouldn't do it - he said the edges wouldn't seal properly. I showed him pictures in the magazines, but he said no. I adore him, so I went with his suggestion of routing it into the countertop, which you obviously couldn't do with a farm sink. There are obviously ways to do this, and I kind of wish I'd pushed harder. I think you could do it - just seal the edges often. You couldn't have an oiled finish - it would have to be a poly. My finish is oiled, so I guess that's why it wouldn't have worked - the edges would have looked different.

Thanks for the follow-ups. I'm waiting for my KD to get back to me to confirm that he meant the warranty on the Boos and not the cabinets. I am willing to forgo the counter-top warranty as it is only for 1 year, but I don't want to void the cabinet warranty.

I can't figure out why it's such a big deal, they put wooden boats in the water all the time.

On attic mag there are several examples of butcher block with undermounted sinks. It is a very beautiful look!

I was told by Boos butcher block if you do an undermount, even with waterlox on the exposed edge, it voids their warranty. I still gave it serious consideration.

Question to eandhl and others:
We have an undermount sink with butcher block. Currently it's oiled--a mistake I believe. Was thinking of going with urethane though don't like the gloss.

Question is: we have Waterlox on the floors and LOVE it. I have not found any reference to it on countertops, particularly from the standpoint of food safety. I'd love to use it: anyone with advice/experience?
