Different Granite for Backsplash than Counter?

We like Cambrian Black Leather for the counter, but wife wants a full height backsplash and that would be too much black. What are the opinions about using a lighter granite for the full height backsplash? Would that look too strange? Would one of the gold's look good with black and should it be polished or matte finish?

I recently attended KBIS and Coverings to check out all the companies that produce countertops, backsplashes, and related countertop products. The backsplashes were all beautiful and unique. I saw so many different combinations of counters and backsplashes that I can honestly say the only limits you have are your imagination.

Anyway, polished backsplashes are a bit easier to clean than the matted finish, but both can look very nice depending on the color combination you choose.

As far as I know, There is no set "rule" that applies to
what you are proposing..... IMHO - Polished would certainly make
a much easier surface to clean.

Lighter colors - especially Golds - look way cool with
Cambrian Black...

Go with your heart and put in what turns YOU on!!!!

Yes, that would be easier, but I would really like the look of the liner between the granite pieces. The finished ends will only be on the vanities, and I can disguise those with grout or matching caulk. There are no exposed edges at the tub... it is in a niche that butts up against each of the vanities. So, in your first scenario, why do you say to use caulk and not grout between the top and bottom of the tile and the granite? I was thinking of this order: 1) put up cement board 2) set the decorative tile (being careful about making sure it is the correct depth for the backsplash) 3) let the thinset dry completely 4) glue on the backsplash 5) let the glue dry completely 6) grout the decorative tile (????) 7) caulk the top of the granite backsplash What do you think?

It depends on the color of the backsplash tile - if the backsplash will look obtrusive sticking out into wallspace, then I prefer it to end with the cabinet. Else it will look like a square of tile floating on the wall. If folks want to do that, it's almost better aesthetically to go all the way up to the ceiling. But that's my feeling. As you see - the aesthetic is so individual. In your case, with just a couple inches to the end of the wall, it isn't as big of a deal, but if it is a darker color I would keep it ending at the cabinet.

I think white would be a nice contrast. I've attached a link to a GW member's (kellienoelle) kitchen that used Delicatus granite & a classic white backsplash. White cabs, black counters & a backsplash other than white?

FYI, here are some of my inspiration photos. I love the red accents in this first one (my compliments to SoonerMagic--I hope it's OK that I'm re-posting this) but I'm just not sure if white subway tile might be too stark in our kitchen. Our cabs are white rather than off-white, there's no window above the sink and there won't be much painted wall showing. If we went with this color scheme we'd probably do something like BM Bennington Gray on the walls. Not certain if we'd use the contrasting grout or go with something whiter. I like how the beige-y backsplash in this 2nd photo adds a little more color to the room. Was thinking a subway tile in this shade might still work nicely with red accents (with paint in a similar beige shade): A third option would be to do a grayish paint (BM Gray Owl?) and go with a subway tile in carrara marble something like the one below (sorry--I'm not sure whose pic this is). The problem is I'm not sure that would coordinate well with the red in our dining room. It's also a cooler color scheme than I'd originally planned. Any thoughts? Our floors are hardwood, by the way--similar to the color in pic #2 or just a touch lighter. Thanks again for all the input!

We have golden oak cabinets. Would Madura Gold be a good backsplash with Cambrian Black Leather or can you recommend another gold tone granite with some black in it that would compliment the Cambrian?

I enjoy reading your posts. Wish you were closer to Chicago.

That sounds like a yummy combination. Best thing is to take a door, a granite sample, flooring sample and start shopping. Since granite varies so much from slab to slab, I think you'll have to see it in person to decide. You might be lucky enough to be able to use remnants too, depending on how big your BS area is!

I had another idea - How about Rainforest Brown Marble backsplash with Cambrian Black Leather counters? Would the flecks in the Cambrian fight with the busy marble?
