Solution for missing cabinet drawers?

Hi everyone!

My husband and I just bought a foreclosure, and the previous owner did some wacky things to the house, including taking four entire drawers from the cabinets. I've located a dealer who quoted me at $150 per drawer, or $600 to replace. We could really use that $600 on other, more pressing projects in the house, so I was wondering if anyone had any photos or ideas on what else could go there? I am most concerned about the missing drawers in our kitchen, pictured here (The missing drawers are on the right, directly to the left of the sink):

Would any of these work in my little space? It's about 20 inches wide, 17 inches tall with the drawer hardware taken out, and 22 inches deep. I'd love to see photos of anyone who has something other than drawers in their cabinet space!

And before anyone asks, no, there aren't any other drawers in the house I could relocate to the 4 missing spots. They're all unique. That would be too easy! :)

Look for another source for the drawers. I assume you determined the brand name of the cabinets and went to a local dealer? Are there other local dealers? If not how about on-line?

The baskets would probably look fine but would have to be squared off so they cover the entire front of the space. Also, have you checked into the cost of having a matching door made? It might be cheaper and then you could modify the inside of the cabinet however you want.

I have the Blum corner drawers like Remodelfla posted above, with some modification to the box. I LOVE them. I'm too whipped to answer questions, but if you do a search, I've answered them before. The reason for the diagonal drawers is so that they won't bump into each other. Otherwise you need a big stile that lets your hardware past. I have knobs, but pulling one isn't awkward in the least. I don't notice it. I did the math once. The only corner solution where you gain significantly over a blind corner, other than an open box you have to crawl into to access the back, is the full circle lazy susan with the diagonal door. With that you get about 20% more storage per level. You get a little more than blind with a pie cut, and, depending on the drawer size, a little more or less than pie cut with drawers. Magic corners are significantly less than any of the other solutions, but sometimes worth the gain in the non-magic cabinet on the L. If you want more info, e-mail me or ask me Monday.

My tall oven cabinet came with a shelf, so I just put it high enough to fit my griddle and extra long platters and then placed the dividers on top of the shelf. The dividers can be screwed down, but I didn't bother as they don't move much without the screws and it also meant I didn't have to drill holes in my shelf! Even if the cabinet had not come w/the shelf, I was going to ask for one since I already had planned for this storage based on what I had seen here in the thread linked below. I think I got the idea from Gizmonike and Sail-Away. BTW...I was originally going to get the Rev-A-Shelf dividers but put these from Walmart in temporarily. The Walmart ones worked so well that I didn't bother to replace them...besides, I would have needed 6 packs of 2-dividers each and at $14.95 per 2-pack, this was much cheaper! I used 3 dividers from Walmart at $5.95 each, so $18 vs $90...easy decision! I also bought two more of those dividers and put them under my corner prep sink...one in each deep corner One holds cutting boards, the other holds my pizza stones & cast iron frying pan. I'm not quite understanding (don't worry, it's me, not you). Does he shower or bathe? If he showers, it seems like a towel rack, for him, over at the other end of the tub, wouldn't be terribly handy. But, I do think there needs to be a towel rack at the tub. Here is my "train rack". Wish the towel ensemble looked as good now as it did when I took this picture 7.5 years ago! ps...the armoire you see in the mirror reflection is NOT in front of the window. We weren't finished with the bedroom yet. Well, sorry. For some reason I can't submit the reply with the picture included.

I want to find out what the actual exact BTUs of the current burners I have are, to figure out how much extra I actually NEED. It's easy to be tempted by the super powerful options but maybe something that just isn't awful would be enough. :) Although I'm also intrigued by the cleaning on an open burner - I don't like cleaning around sealed burners, it's just one of those things I find generally annoying. Our fridge is a full-fridge Miele so it goes nearly right to the ceiling, no room for storage above it. Eventually I do hope to replace the cabinets and when I do that we might add a built-in microwave and that would give a space for that sort of storage above. (The ceiling in our kitchen is also a bit low compared to the rest of the house - it was the porch at some point and got closed in for the kitchen. So that loses a little space also.) I LOVE the Super Susan. Not sure we have a place to put that but that's so much nicer than with a pole in the middle. One thing I am thinking for more storage - not for pots and pans but for smaller pantry stuff - is to have shallow storage with a sliding door set INTO the wall to make use of the space near the backdoor that is too narrow for proper cabinets. But that's for when we redo the cabinets and right now we're just replacing the range. (Luckily the old cabinets were set up for a wider range than the normal 30" so I can go to 36" no problem.)

I agree with quirkykitchen on the baskets. The location of the missing drawers is near the sink, which is where basket storage of root veggies is convenient. The wine rack option is nice too. Both options are pretty easy diy projects. Good luck!

Your kitchen has such great structure with which to work. I congratulate you on your purchase. Exciting!

The thrifty part of me would be looking in Habitat of Humanity Restores and similar stores. But to keep the pedals moving, the pragmatic side of me would be looking for a replacement door.

From a distance, it appears the cabinets are possibly maple (can't tell if I see some knotting), with a square flat panel door front in the honeytone stain family. The opened base is next to the sink looks about 18", with prep space above. Functionally, I'd consider modifying the interior to allow a garbage pullout or garbage can.

The link below offers replacement doors and breaks it down by wood and stain. Perhaps you could send them a piece of the remaining wood for them to match, if the price works for you. This assuming you don't know the cabinet manufacturing details to call about replacement etc., or if a replacement like shown happens to be more in budget.

This may not be what you have in mind, but since the glides are still there, it would be fairly easy to make two deep storage drawers, by using the two drawers you have, one in the bottom position, and one in the second from the top position. Replace the fronts with slabs large enough to cover the openings, remove the rails that separate the top 2, and bottom 2 drawers, then use the drawers for tall bottles of oil, canisters of sugar, flour, etc.

You could make the slab fronts to look like two drawers each, if you'd rather have the appearance of four drawers. You're painting anyway, right? I hope this is making sense. :]

Use the second drawer in the bottom position to hold a trash bin. You'd still need to remove the rails and get a door made to fit, to cover the opening.

mama g has a good idea if you don't have another trash pullout.

there are also cheaper places online to buy a basic drawer, then you'd just need the drawer fronts.

in the case of the trash pull out, a 'door' to attach to the drawer put in the bottom spot.

check around for a local cabinet maker who might make the drawer fronts/door to match at a lot less in price.

A local cabinet maker could buy new boxes and copy the drawer fronts for a lot less than $600.

Why don't you just go to some of the many online drawer box people and get the boxes. For a lot less money.
Then, contact the manufacturer for drawer face replacements. Some of the other ideas are certainly viable, though.

How crazy people can be about taking stuff!
