Powder room makeover: Towel ring placement

Since I decided to put the kitchen facelift on hold for now, I decided to tackle a smaller and cheaper project first!

This is our downstairs guest/powder room in June, BEFORE (previous owner)

and this is a few weeks ago, not yet painted - hard to tell in the pics but the paint was a sort of putty beige, a bit dingy to me. but the vinyl plank flooring made a big difference, though not really visible in this pic.

Last weekend I painted the whole room with the leftover BM Mascarpone from the living room - which brightened it up even if it doesn't look much different in the photo, and I bought a quart of paint in RL Turret Stair to paint the cabinets.. I sanded them to remove the top paint layer and painted with a foam roller. I don't like the yellowy fake marble countertop but it will stay until we decide what if anything to do about all the countertops. I replaced the slab mirror with a framed one from Home Depot, which I think dresses it up a lot and matches the cabinets.

I just received the brushed nickel cabinet knobs, towel ring and toiler roll holder.

So now my question is - which side to mount these items on? For the towel ring, it seems like the right side of the sink would be most natural, but then I'd have to put the vase on the left and the first thing you'd see looking in the door would be the towel instead of the vase.

Second the toilet roll holder - it was previously on the left when sitting on the toilet. It was recessed and I want to replace it with a flip-up non recessed holder so I patched the large square hole and painted over the spot. However you can still see the texture of the plaster is not quite the same there. SHould I place the new hold over the same spot, to disguise it, or on the right side of the toilet for right-handed people? Left hand side would be behind the door, right hand side is seen coming in the room.

I'm also kinda wishing I'd done one wall in the leftover Mexicana (deep red with warm terracotta tones) but I want it to be done with the painting now!

You can also mount the ring forward from the counter as in this picture, lower than when mounting above the counter.

You've done a good job with the transformation.

I'd probably mount the toilet paper holder in the previous spot (but work on the finish so it blends better).
For the sink area I'd forgo a wall ring altogether and either get a countertop towel ring/stand or just have a couple of small towels folded to the left of the sink.

If you still want some of the Mexicana.......you could always paint the willow. :)

In looking at his card, i see he sells all appliances, kitchen and bath cabinets and fixtures, hardware, etc. 212-682-2716 Ralph Marciano (Economy Buying Group) I wish I had found him before I bought some of my stuff. But I did get two Robern medicine cabinets, Grohe shower tower, Toto washlet, Panasonic Whisper Warm, and assorted Ginger products. I think my savings over the lowest prices I found was about $850.00 with him They do have an ebay store, but I only found them through that, purchased directly through them My suggestion is to decide on all the things you might want, get pricing, and then have him price it out. He was absolutely lower in everything. Give him a call. He's a swell older gentleman who has been in the business over 30 years and definitely knows his stuff. It's like just dealing with a friend. Tell him Bonnie told you to call and let me know how you make out. I believe their ebay name is : rachelbargains05 So you can search them out there, but they have access to everything, not just what is on there.

Linelle Once again, you rescued me regarding my hand towel issue with your experience. :):) I have exactly the same layout and was debating between 2 single rod/ 1 double rod/ 1 single rod and 1 ring next to each other. Since my hall bath is being used by my 2 girls and a toddler along with my very old mother-in-law, I wanted to have separate towel placement for them. Thanks a lot for the visual as well. Not QUITE what you asked but I had hooks for all the towels in my previous house's master bathroom. So much easier and everything dried quickly. DH, wonderful as he may be otherwise, has a pathological inability to hang a towel straight on a towel rod :-) and I think towels on a ring look tidy for about five minutes - the other bath and half-bath had rings which drove me nuts. Unless the ring is fixed in place, if you remove the towel from the ring the ring bangs into the wall (this has been the case with all the towel rings I've had anyway, with a resulting dent in the wall behind) and much of the time it's haphazardly stuffed back into the ring after use, and if you use it while it's still on the ring it looks rather discombobulated afterward unless you're just delicately dabbing your fingertips. :-) Our current half bath has a towel rod at this time and it seems like I'm constantly straightening out a towel that's all crooked. Just put up a hook yesterday in the one full bath so the hand towel no longer has to share a rod with my bath towel. This is MY experience, your mileage may vary.

Feedback much appreciated. I think maybe a toilet in the corner is just so uncommon that it looks off. They do make toilets specifically for this application though. Once we get the ugly wallpaper off we intend to take another look at placement of the fixtures. In order to have a comfortable distance between the sink and toilet it may be the only way to go. I'd probably mount it on the right but a little higher and forward of the vase. I LOVE the marscapone with turret stair.. a touch of the mexican would be a nice accent. I am not sure I'd paint the willow.. are you tied to the willow? I'd love to see red flowers.. or perhaps towels in a color similar to mexicana?

Not to get too technical, but I'm right handed and prefer the tp holder on the left so I can hold the roll with my left hand while I tear the sheet with my right.

I would probably put the towel holder on the left to see the pretty vase when you walk in....but then again, the reverse is fine too. Bathrooms are so full of hard edges, that I appreciate some fabric, like in the towels, when I walk in, and they can add color too.

I agree with Annie in that either would work. I think if you have pretty towels, it is fine to see them first.

I don't have pretty towels yet, I was waiting to buy a new set until I saw how this turned out. The curly willow I just stuck in there but I will consider other items. I'm not a fan of silk flowers where they can be seen up cloee so perhaps dried.

One thing I am ruling out based on practicality is the ring being not over the countertop. The room used to have a bath towel bar mounted over there in the right and there were always drips of water where people reached for the towel. I am looking for a nice large colorful piece if art for that wall the room is long and narrow so it needs something interesting there.

If I put the towel on the left it will also disguise the electric outlet there. A warm red towel set is a great idea!

I went with towel ring on the left, and the toilet roll holder in the same spot as the old one. We love the new pivot type with no spring loaded part! I put the hardware on - now it's done minus wall art! I am ordering a colorful tuscan poppies field print for the long wall (toilet is to the right behind the door at other end of long rectangle).

Thanks! The countertop is faux marble and not my favorite - it's also chipped in a couple places but the sink is also in rough shape (had to epoxy some rust spots) so maybe next year we'll replace the countertop and sink together. But it's function for now and more liveable I think.
