Slipcovers in Chenille??

Hi there, I am new here and hoping I could get some advice. I orginally posted in the furniture forum and then thought that my question would be better answered here. I apologize for the long post. The first part is about fabric, then second part about brands.

Should I do a Chenille Slipcover on a new sofa? I really wanted to do a pottery barn style sectional for our family room but with two very active boys (6 & 8) I cannot see doing canvas and having it look nice or last long. So I was thinking of doing the slipcovers in a chenille -- but I haven't seen this anywhere. Is this because it looks strange or is ill-fitting? Should I just give up the idea of a slipcover and do the upholstered sofa with a skirt?

Part II. I have read the posts on Lee, Rowe and Clayton Marcus and I am consdering one of the above for a family room sectional (I know the arguments against sectionals, but it works in our space and we are not moving). I am having a bit of a decision making problem b/c I can't decide whether to go with the lee which is 2 x the price of the rowe. We have a friend in the furniture business and he said that Rowe quality is fine and that they have a good product. We had a "Domain" sofa for 12 years and while the back pillows are looking a little crushed, overall it held up pretty well and we were happy with it. I can't imagine this will be a forever couch, but I want something that will withstand some jumping on (when my back is turned) and look nice and last 10 years.

I have a Flexsteel chenille sofa sleeper, and hate it. Partly it's because since I bought it, my taste has changed; I like a different look these days. But it's also because the sofa looked cheap from the day it arrived, and the chenille has worn poorly. We chose one of Flexsteel's toughest fabrics, one the company swore would hold up well with kids, dogs, etc. We've only had the sofa two years, the children are not allowed to jump on it, and there are already runs and rips. The seller and Flexsteel have been utterly unhelpful in resolving these issues. So, fwiw, my experience differs from other posters. I'd never buy chenille again, and I'll never buy another Flexsteel piece, either. Leather and high-quality ultrasuede for me from here out!

I couldn't agree with Parma more-- I am clapping wildly hahah. I was looking at a smith bros sofa when I bought my leathercraft sofa. I am so sorry that I didn't buy the smith bros. I swear it was the most comfy thing my bum had ever touched! It's all about how they make their cushions--the "sit" is firm but sooo soft and comfy. I didn't need the sales pitch or cut-away cushion to sell me... I knew I loved it the minute I sat in it. I can't really give you a price range since I was looking at a leather sectional.. but do check them out. I have seen SO many deals on high quality sofas since I bought my sofa in April. Furniture stores are struggling and offering good deals-- maybe it is different in your area but it would not be difficult to get something really nice for under 2000.

Can silk/satin/chenille pillows go with RH Perennials fabric?

If you go onto Houzz and type in linen+sectional+pillow you will get thousands of pictures to browse through. The "linen" RH fabric is actually an indoor-outdoor acrylic, which is akin to Sunbrella, so it's going to wear like iron and would be a good choice for wearability for a family. It's going to clean up really well, probably better then the micro-suede. Most home dec fabrics are labeled dry clean only as it protects the manufacturer as it's the safest alternative to cleaning. Most home dec fabrics will shrink if washed, and most lose their finishes which will cause them to look worn and wrinkled. In the case of the white canvas slipcovers the wrinkled look is desired, the shrinkage not so much. In the case of this acrylic "linen" I would think you'd want to dry clean it down the road if it needed it just to keep it looking crisp, although soap and water won't hurt it. To the original question, I think you could add some silk dupioni pillows - they have a textural interest too, or some hand painted silk pillows, and a chenille throw and it'd look nice. Couch slipcover & color help needed

Great story Woodie! I guess I should order some swatches before I make my final decision. Also consult with SO. I know he is going to hate #4, he doesn't like "cozy granny" style at all! Although I know he likes that wine color. But he likes beige and brown too. Wondering about the linen one, there's some logic in using a slipcover that ANNOUNCES it is a slipcover, but I'm not sure if those one piece ones would be a continual sloppy problem. We don't have kids around to play fort on the couch unfortunately, but I lounge around on it almost every day when I am at the house. Even more so when I get a TV and stereo set up in there. My other grandmother had a chair with a slipcover, but that was just one big chenille thing with fringe on the edges which she had to continually tuck in and adjust. It had zero fitting though, and she didn't use anything to keep it tucked in. The grandmother that this couch came from (and the rocker in the room) had all her stuff slipcovered, and you would never know it. Even the rocker was padded and slipcovered to death, I had no idea it had the heart shaped carving on the back. The seat, back and arms were covered in padding tied down. That was the best rocker for playing pirate ship on! Anyway maybe grandma made those slipcovers herself, she was an inveterate seamstress. I vaguely remember big tacks with clear plastic knobs on them that I got in trouble for popping. Also maybe some pins when mom took the covers off. It's a 40 year old memory so I don't think it will get any more clear.
