Craft decorating question

I came across some inexpensive and quite ugly oil on canvas paintings for $3.99. I know if I went to buy just the canvas it would cost more than that.

So I'm looking and thinking that I could use the canvas and make some other wall art. I've seen on decorating shows where they take canvas and cover it with fabric and voila instant art. It's simple enough, but will it look right? I'm chicken, what can I say. I always second guess my crafting ability because I'm not a crafty person in practice. I have lots of ideas in my head, but always afraid to try them.

So tell me, have any of you made this type of wall art? Give me some inspiration and courage to go buy some ugly canvas to transform. Thanks

I did that once, years ago, but did it the other way around... First, I had bought a gold leaf bamboo frame that I liked, at a tag sale. Then, I purchased a stretched canvas to fit the frame. I found the perfect piece of fabric that I liked, it was sort of like a toile, that had a Japanese scene. I centered the scene over the canvas, and pulled it taught, and just stapled it all around..and voila!! as you said, Instant Art. It was a very simple project. Funny thing... when I sold my old house, I had a tag sale, and sold it...lol... It's not a hard thing to do..just have to line up all the right elements to make it work. Hope this was helpful.

thanks jane, I wasn't even thinking about a frame, just the stretched canvas. You have helped give me some courage.

Marilyn what do you sell? I'd love to see pics of your displays. Re packing: We have a lot of empty 4 gal joint compound buckets (you can also buy new pretty colored ones at HD) that I layered the wrapped plate flowers in. I put out a call to friends for bubble wrap and packing materials so I didn't have to pay for it. I also put some wrapped plate flowers in a metal milk crate that was part of the display. The wrapping comes in handy when you sell. What did you use for bags? My favorite bags to put the sold items in were 12x12 clear scrapbooking bags that I had saved from when I used to buy lots of sb paper. I actually called my friend who used to have a sb business to see if she had any leftover bags, but she didn't. I may invest in some of these bags if I do it again. I put my flyer so it showed from the outside throught the clear plastic and the wrapped plate flower fit perfectly inside. Kathy

Karen..I like Sal's idea. Here's what my sister did. Her runner had pointed ends. She folded one point over onto the front, the amount she folded over was eyeballed until it looked right.this let the back fabric show on the front. She then sewed by hand through the back, catching the back of the folded down are with stitches, but did not let the stitches show onto the front of the folded down part. She stitched about 1 1/2 to 2 inches down...this made a casing. She then sewed a tassel onto the turned down part's point and pinned on a beautiful brooch she had that co ordinated with the fabric. (could use a fancy button too.) She then slipped in a piece of dowel rod painted to match the tassel color and about 6 inches longer than the runner's width. She placed cup hooks in the wall so that the runner hung just inside them. She put the dowell on the cup hooks, and then she hung satin cording with tassels off the ends of the dowells that stuck out. It looks like a beautiful bell pull..and hangs between her dining room and living room. I think these would make a stunning display grouped together...or on either side of a window or doorway. Putting it as simple as I know how: First, find your picture, right click and save to your computer then go to step 1. 1. Have a photo storage place, like Photobucket or Tiny pic (I prefer tinypic.com) Use the first set of codes (HTML for Websites) for the Garden web/ KT some of the other message boards use the second set of codes (IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards) (MH) 2. Paste this code in the message box 3. Preview your message, make sure it came out like you wanted. 4. Click Submit...your done!

You're right, I'm going back for them tomorrow. Hope some experienced crafter doesn't beat me to them. LOL They were at the grocery store, believe it or not. I guess that explains why they were ugly. HA!
