Paisley is for old ladies?
Comments (29)Chijim: that's beautiful! I don't think my house can ever look like that :-( my3dogs: Thank You!! That's such a nice offer - I love how you combine different fabric. In fact, the hardest thing for me is to combine different prints to make a room looking rich & layered. It's so much easier to have a plain sofa because anything look good w/ it -- really a no brainer. I'm just really glad that you all don't think that I'm having a senile moment :-) I must admit I wasn't sure a/b it myself since every magazine has shown beige beige & more beige sofas! I always love paisley (& Indian print & British Colonial style). Dark wood & white linen & paisley chairs -- that's hot. DH is stuck on the California MCM style --- not so much that it's what he loves as it is what he's exposed to everyday. I'm sure he can be convinced otw. And if some velvet & leather pillows can change his mind, maybe its time to bring out the velvet bustier and the leather whip LOL :-> cooperbailey: can't get rid of him yet since I still need him to carry the sofa in for me. I got a pix of the room where it's supposed to go into. Originally it was supposed to be reuphosltered in velvet & go to our family room but if it stays paisley, it would have to go to our LR where I read & keep my books. The leather sofa would go to the family room instead. Our LR is very bare at the moment -- I haven't gotten that far yet. It needs darker wall but I can't muster the confidence to scale that 20' wall! :-> Here's a shot of the sofa in exile :-D Do you still think it would work as is? Amy: I have an upholsterer who would do it for 350. So it isn't expensive to redo it -- the fabric may cost a lot all depending on what I choose. sheesharee: I love you paisley -- what kind of throw pillows do you put w/ it? kitchendetective: banish DH to the garage -- that is his dream :-D In fact, he's been trying to kick me & my stuff out of his garage. Btw, this is not new. I bought it for 250 (too much?) -- It's done by Henredon for RL so at least the frame is well built. The seat cushion is all down wrapped & in perfect condition (not even out of shape). I'll be back w/ pics of the sofa in its place. :->...See MoreShould the style of your house define decorating inside?
Comments (21)I like your pragmatism Patricia43, and think you hit it right on the head. Like Lynne said too, there are criteria for choosing a home that are more important than the style of the house you love, and usually the house purchased is a compromise. Still, a person who loves Victorian probably wouldn't choose an ultra-modern flat top house filled with stainless steel and clean lines unless it was the only house for sale in the area they had chosen. I don't think a lot of people would even notice that a style of house is Queen Anne and the furniture is French Country. It would take a big contrast for most people. With so many newer houses being a combination of many styles, anything works. That said, I have a neighbor with a house built in the 1980's, hip roof, center front door flanked by two leaded glass bay windows. The house was bought for the size, acreage, and location. She is from El Paso, and remodeled the house to reflect that style. She raised the ceiling without raising the roof to have an open loft, added a wrought iron staircase with Mexican tile on the treds, put Mexican tile throughout the house, had the walls retextured to look like heavy adobe, and painted the walls in shades of ochre. Her furniture is traditional for the most part, leaning toward southwest, but she does have a grand piano in front of one of the bay windows. I found it a bit shocking the first time I saw it finished, simply because style of the inside is so different from the outside, and yet her decor would go with either. I have another friend who also lives in a modern house, raised panel inside, but she is from Florida, and painted every room a bright color, from lime green in the bathroom, yellow and blue in the kitchen, to orange in the living room. She tiled the living room and kitchen using bright colors. Her furniture and accessories are traditional with some antiques. It is a surprise when first seen by newcomers, but it makes it more like home to her and makes her happy. The only reservation I have with both of these houses is that a lot of the changes they have made are permanent, or at least will cost a lot to change, and will affect resale. But neither plan to move any time soon and aren't concerned about resale, and they are happy with their homes. The bottom line is, do what makes you happy since you are the one who has to live with it....See MoreUpdate my old lady look to COOL..
Comments (19)Thank you Marti8a. I recovered the sofas and removed the ruffled skirt and added bun feet. I do not have a before pic. of sofa but it was very country and 80's sea foam green and pink and coordinated with the flowered drapes and cornice. The space is small for today's standards and the newer sofas were so big. I would love to put hardwood in here also. We put it in the kitchen and FR. Here is another before and after pic. Alerit, I agree with patricia43 about classic good bones. Yes I love some of the newer DR sets out there and would love a new set but I think Queen Anne is easy to work with. I think recovering the seats would make a big difference. I would love to replace my armchairs on the end with an upholstered parsons chair. These were the old drapes I had made to match old sofa sorry I don't have a pic of old sofa....See MoreOld ladies
Comments (70)I think we all sometimes read meaning or insult where it is not intended, or at least that is my take blfenton. Littlebug's comments are unnervingly identical to my own thoughts about my life at 58 YO, and how I view women who to my eyes have the luxury of time. I think what she was trying to convey is the sense that at some point the strictures and time demands of employment become more burdensome than the rewards. As Bill Clinton said once in a talk I attended, when you have more yesterdays than tomorrows you start to think more deeply about how you want to spend those tomorrows. I also look with yearning at women who do not have to get up every day and be somewhere for X hours, who can decide what they want to do, or take the time to do what they need to do without squeezing it around 40-or more-working hours. And I do think women experience this more. I personally would never, ever say that a SAH mother of babies, preschoolers or toddlers isn't incredibly busy or stressed during those days at home. But I will probably irk some folks here by saying that, to my eyes at least, once kids are launched, living a SAH life seems a lot more relaxed in general...in fact what else is retirement but living a SAH life?! Obviously people have many burdens and duties that may not be clearly visible. I know we all do ourselves as women a disservice to play that game of who's got it worse/who's got it better. It's only human nature to compare and judge and if this topic shows anything, it shows what a terrifically wide range of life experiences and personalities exist. You can be vital and engaged without having worked a day of your life for pay. You can be vital and engaged and be working while raising children. You can be any combination of those lives, or an entirely different life :). What is so useful for me is reading these stories and experiences. It opens my eyes and my heart to other ways of having a happy and productive life, especially as I get older and face inevitable changes of how my life will unfold. This conversation gives great guidance on how others seek to find connection and engagement, which is in the end for most of us the way we find our happiness....See MoreRelated Professionals
