Multiple rugs in the same room...your thoughts?

When I install hardwood in my living room, I'm going to have a "multiple rug" issue.

I have a split level and the living room has one set of stairs leading up to it, next to the set of stairs that leads to the bedrooms. In addition, the front door opens into the living room, along the same wall the stairs are on.

No one ever uses the front door so that is not really as issue. But, the heaviest floor wear in my whole house occurs in the 8' long area that where the stairs both join the living room.

I'll certainly have an area rug in the living room itself. Then I assume I'll need something in front of the stairs to protect the new wood floor from too much wear. The front door would look odd without a mat of some kind in front of it, so basically that whole stretch of 14' x 5' wall, probably needs a runner.

Then there is the problem of a runner on the stairs!

My question is, do I have to buy matching rugs for all of these areas? I'd really like something very neutral with very low pile on the stairs, but will probably want something more showy in the living room.

Anyone with multiple rugs in one room that can post pics? Thanks for any comments or advice!
