rug or fabric stores in Los Angeles?

I'm leaving in a few hours to go to LA and thought I would look at rugs while there. Does anyone know of any great rug stores in LA, or any special fabric places I should check out? Thanks!

PS Feel free to post through the weekend because I may have access to a computer.

LA Fashion District is one:) It's on Olympic and ? - sorry - forgot the cross street, but it's huge!!!!!

It really depends on where you are. The garment district downtown is super if you're in the area. If you're in West LA, F&S on Pico is great; they have two stores, one for home dec and the other for garment fabric. 10629 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, California 90064 I think Mood Fabrics opened an LA store too. Ah, yes, 6151 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, California 90035 (corner of Pico and La Cienega). And Diamond Foam, 611 S. La Brea, is a real trip with lots of home dec fabric. And it's just right down the street from the La Brea Bakery (yum). HTH

I posted this last year and it still holds true. It's hard to make a schedule for watering. You have to adjust depending on the local conditions and soil type. Your goal should be consistent moisture at the root zone. How you achieve that is the problem. One week might be sunny, windy and dry and the next week overcast and no wind. Check your soil and make the necessary adjustments to keep it moist. I'm in CA with caliche soil (heavily amended) Caliche will turn into a brick in a day or two. I'm constantly checking the soil and watering as needed. digdirt posted this a couple of years ago...it still holds true. The goal is consistent and stable soil moisture levels throughout the season and despite the weather. That doesn't come from any "schedule". What "schedule" may work for one person would kill another person's plants and vice versa. So you have to learn what YOUR soil and YOUR plants need. That means using your hands to determine what slightly moist soil feels like down near the roots and learning to keep it that way all the time whatever the weather. That may mean watering once a day or once a week. Unless you have a very shallow bed of less than 8" then every other day is likely way too often but 30 mins with a soaker hose is not much water at all. The average soaker hose delivers less than 1/4 gallon per hour so time yours. Learn how long it actually takes to deliver 1 gallon of water by burying a tuna can or similar 1 1/2" deep can in the soil so that the top rim sits at soil level and run the hose over it. Run the hose until the can is full and note how long it takes. A crude but effective method. Once you know the time needed then do that 1x a week, maybe 2x a week if really hot and dry and see how your plants respond. Do you heavily mulch your plants? If not, do so. What type of soil do you have? Sandy? Clay? High organic levels or not? How close are your plants planted? Are all parts of the bed getting equal amounts of water? What time of day do you water? This is only some of the variables involved. The main point is to learn to be flexible. Forget schedules and learn to water when the plants need it instead. And be sure to mulch. I use grass clippings myself, but there's other options out there.

Did more research (bradington-young) and am corn-fused. Yeah, I want leather, however, it too is vulnerable to wear, tear, fading, etc., and I'm including the pure aniline leather (top grade) which is not recommended for animals, stains from spills, etc. I will be using the sofa everyday and evening. SOOO here's the question: To fabric or not to fabric (recliner) sofa? My biggest concern is spill-staining as I have friends who are professional klutzes and drop/spill/break is their middle name...me 2! This probably sounds nutz but so far all my decisions on my remodeling have been spot-on and so it goes for the sofa & chairs. Just thought I'd throw this out there and the last thing I wanna do is go on a tangent but that's how things get distilled for me. Thanks everybody for the great feedback so far and by far this site seems to have the best information. Price is a consideration. Am willing to spend up to $2k for the sofa and about $800 per chair. If you're going to recommend a fabric, a little explanation would help. J/L

Alfred, I have not read through all of your thread, but from my perspective, it seems like the tile is ok. Have you looked into having it professionally cleaned? A “green” type of cleaning maybe, if possible - I’m sure something like this should be available in CA. Then just do the pavers and maybe some edge plantings in unpaved area, and put up a gazebo. You could start with, or just permanently use, a portable gazebo - as I show in pic in my first comment. I would really not get jackhammers, etc. and try to do this yourself. If you want to make a major change in the future, I would recommend just saving up and hiring professionals. You will save yourself the wear and tear and probably get better results that way. I really think you can work with your tile as it is. If you want to change/vary the look, in some areas you could place some outdoor rugs.

lars, most people don't have an outlet for sewing thread. I was in WM yesterday for the first time since way back when and the small sewing dept was almost devoid of any fabric, except for fleece and there were only a handful of thread spools. Joanns, was only marginally better, marginally, at best. At both venues, both the cotton fabric and thread were in seriously short supply. We are going to see even more tightening of the market for sewing supplies, among many other things. I have sewn sunbrella fabric into outdoor pillows and it does last a long time. Mine are not filled with drain dry stuffing so I don't leave them in the rain. I also have some reusable grocery bags made of sunbrella and I have been using them for almost two decades now and I see no reason that they would not last another generation. I don't recall using any special thread to sew them. But they are not exposed to the elements and that is the factor that makes the most difference with outdoor things as to which thread to use. Donna, yes the pattern companies are repackaging the old stuff, but without the fabrics available to sew them up with. I had a whole big bunch of vintage patterns from the 20s up to my own that probably look a lot like yours. I had to get rid of them and had a hard time finding anyone interested in them. I ended up sending some to my sister who passed them on to some other venue, and still have a few. I went through the remaining ones recently and relegated some to the compost heap. I am never going to use them. I did use some of those from the 40s when I was a young woman. There are cuts and construction in some of those old patterns that you just don't see anymore. I think that I have all the patterns that I am ever going to use in my small stash. I got rid of a lot of things that were really mundane and quite unremarkable.

Michael Levine is a great fabric source, and it's in the garment district in downtown LA. All along 9th and Maple Sts. are lots of small jobbers, with lots of fabrics from bridal to fake fur.

Diamond is more expensive but wonderful, wonderful materials. If you go there, eat at Campanile across the street and take home goodies from LA Brea Bakery.

Corner of 6th and La Brea, northwest corner. I forget the name. Is that Diamond? Voted best buy fabrics in several local newspapers. Also, as idee says, Michael Levine on Maple north of Olympic (Downtown, not Beverly Hills or Hancock Park area). If you know what you want and ML doesn't have it, talk to them about ordering it for you. There's something like a $15.00 handling fee for shipping, but it's negligible in the scheme of things. Also, International Silks and Woolens (either 3rd or Beverly, east of the Beverly Center). And you really need to check out Aga John (spelling??) in the Pacific Design Center. Drool.

Thanks for the info everyone. I should have mentioned that I'll only be here for the weekend and these sound like "weekday only" places. But I'll save the info for when I'm here longer, and also pass it on to my mom.

I made an appt to go to a rug store today and saw a beautiful old Tabriz, with indigo and chocolate brown--and, unfortunately, some bare spots and frayed (sp?) areas. Definitely needs to be cleaned up but really a possibility if I can get over the coppery field. I'm getting to the point that I love looking for rugs (or so I think) but am absolutely exhausted and frustrated during the actual search.
