Nothing (sturdier) on CL? I think that would be your best bet. I often see tables in good to excellent condition that would work perfectly with your chairs on my local CL.

I would look at Great Windsor Chairs at their Shaker Round or Queen Anne Round tables + base. The Queen Anne in particular would be pretty appropriate and you can get a solid cherry large table for under $2500. For a large round table this is not a bad price for something handcrafted where you can select the finish.

if you need it for a particular event coming up like Thanksgiving, I would see if you can rent one with a cloth before I would buy one in a hurry.

You could buy a caterer's folding table and keep it covered with a cloth until you find what you really want.

You can make a floor-length cover from lengths of inexpensive dressmaker-width fabric laid crosswise across the table - you stitch them together along their sides where they lie on the surface, and then hem the rest of the seam allowances, so that they are unconnected flaps that allow people to pull their chairs up to the table without distress. You'd also add panels to cover the ends. Then you put a regular cloth as an overcloth on top of that.

It sounds sort of goofy, but it looks just fine, and would allow you to take your time.

Room & Board has a 60" square Andover table that seats 8 for $1600. The shape is fairly simple, though not as delicate as your chairs. Looks like there is a finish similar to the one you show. (Not sure if that's the same finish as your chairs.)

I *love* Great Windsor Chair's tables.. they are local to me (more or less) and have a great reputation. I've yet to see one that isn't gorgeous. I know the prices are likely a bit higher than you'd like-- but they do have periods with special pricing. I dont remember when/how much they discount but it would be worth a phone call if you like the styles.

My husband bashed his knee at a table like you've shown. The tables, with lower shelves are very uncomfortable to sit at. They don't work for tall people and you can't cross your leg.

Try sitting at one.

We call that type of table a knee-banger. It's functional and sturdy but for a tall person it's not very comfortable.

No, it doesn't go with your chairs at all.

When we were first married we had a nice outdoor type table (iron base and round wood top) in our DR that I kept covered with a cloth. It was only 48" but was all our apartment could accomodate. As soon as we had a large separate dining room that table went out on a porch---and is still there. I guess I am just trying to say that if you keep a cloth on the table you can have just about anything underneath it and no one will be the wiser--- you can even get one of those large round tops for a sturdy card table. Just use a topper on the big cloth so you don't have to launder it too often.

Pal-- timeframe is sooner is better than later, but we don't have anything other than a Halloween party coming up, so a folding table with a fun tablecloth will have to do! Budget is $2000 (thanks, MIL!) BUT, I completely cringe at that number. TY for the link-- I didn't know you could mix/match the bases and legs. Very nice.

Jane, I never would have thought of the banging! I don't really like the table anyway, but that definitely makes me say no to that style. We are pretty short here, but why take a chance?

New Bee, I like a round one, but DH thinks they look messy. I think square will seem too big. The dining room is in the center of the house-- you have to walk through it to get just about everywhere, so it's really tricky. We need a table small enough to get by easily but large enough to seat our family of 7 at least every night. (Figure the kitchen will work in the day.)

My "dream" table would be one that I don't have to babysit. I would LOVE to have a table that the kids can play games on, we could hang out there together, etc. without having to always have a pad and tablecloth on. I want to eat and drink there! Do I need formica??? Not such a fan of glass with kids.

Anele, I totally get what you are saying about not wanting to babysit the table-- especially with so many little ones. I really like the lines of the amish table and it looks sturdy and durable while still being stylish. It is a little modern but in a dark finish, I think it would work well for your chairs.

Anele, I purchased a table for oldest DD(not this one)and thought the quality was reasonably good, although the top is wood, maybe a veneer? Anyway, here's another style at a reasonable price, with a leaf, but states it only sits 6, but if you were to see it IRL, may decide otherwise.
