help with tv placement in living room

So I am so against putting a tv in the living room, but more and more I want a tv in there. The room is too nice to not be hanging out in there. We mostly watch tv in our basement and have a tv in the den that we hardly use.

What I need help with is how to place a tv in the living room. The fireplace is so high that the tv would be so high to be looking at from the sofa. Also, the walls are plaster.

Any suggestions on alternatives or certain stands that pull down?

I wouldn't keep the color scheme, but I think I'd put the TV on the orange wall. The yellow wall would be better in a vacuum, with its high window, but the advantage of the orange is that you could probably arrange it so you can watch from the kitchen too, if so desired. I'd get a long console for underneath it, whether you intend to hang or stand it -- at least 50% bigger than the TV itself. (Not much clue to style here, so not sure what to recommend...) Then you can assemble your furniture to gather around the fireplace and TV -- large couch with back to kitchen, with arm chairs on either side facing in. End tables with lamps, a coffee table, etc.

I’d build a room over that great room in a heartbeat. Have you ever lived in a house with a two-story room like that? They are a pain in the ass to decorate and they screw up the heating and cooling of not only that room, but the upstairs, too. As for the fireplace placement, I’d move it to the side wall, like you’ve shown in your photoshopped pics, regardless of whether or not I was keeping it as a two-story room. :) Edit: Actually, I forgot to take the size of the tv into account when I made my earlier recommendation. A 70” tv might dwarf the fireplace over which it’s placed, but I think I’m definitely against the drawing you have with the tv between the windows; I’d probably put it on the short wall where you can see it from the kitchen AND so it’s not the first thing you see when you walk in the front door!

I suggest grouping whatever living room furniture you buy around the fireplace. It is what I did in my long living room (mine is wider than yours). Here are some layout suggestions: Before you buy any furniture, make sure you have the room to lay it out something similar to the above suggestions. Put tape on the floor, if you have to and make sure you have enough room to walk around the furniture. You can also try Basset Furniture and/or La-Z-Boy showrooms. They can help you with furniture arrangement and they do not charge you, like a designer does. For the TV, you could either get an entertainment center that will fit right or left of the fireplace or your could even mount your TV on the wall (I have 2 TV's that are wall mounted and I love it). When I was getting ready to move into my house 3 years ago, I needed brand new living room, dining room, and family room furniture. I shopped sales and I found my 2 sofas that are in my living room first at a furniture store selling La-Z-Boy furniture. I got lucky! The sofas were on sale for over 60% off and after choosing them, everything else fell into place. For the family room, I went to a La-Z-Boy showroom, found a reclining sofa I loved, and it was also on sale. I choose soft, neutral colors for it and two rocking recliners. We use this room to relax and watch movies on our big TV in the family room. I also suggest looking at rooms on Houzz and see what appeals to you, in style and color.

But to your point grapefruit, if the tv was in the bar area, the seating would be awkward for a family of 5. That’s why I’m looking for a solution that can add more comfortable seating for tv watching and possibly replacing current furniture with a sectional.

I love this TV stand. Very unique. Put the TV in a corner or you could move the sofa perpendicular to the fireplace with the chairs opposite and put the TV on the wall opposite.

Otherwise, I like Annie's idea.

What a lovely room-- I can see why you'd want to spend more time there! Are you open to rearranging furniture? I'd float the sofa in front of window with the chair opposite.. then put the tv (assuming it's a large one) on the wall behind where the sofa is currently.

I have my tv over the fireplace now and I hate it.. it's the best place for it but it completely sucks the charm out of the fireplace. And yes--it's too high.

If you are thinking a smaller tv.. then you could probably keep your furniture arrangement and look for a small cabinet-- perhaps on rollers-- that would disguise the tv and allow it to be moved as needed.

The shelves are a great spot for a smaller tv-- but I fear they are too far from the seating for comfortable viewing.

You would need to do some minor rearranging, but I think the wall to the left of the big window would be a good spot. That way you can enjoy the FP and TV.

Such a beautiful room! Just the opposite of funkyart, don't *ruin* the ambience by putting a 'shiny black box' in the middle which, IMO, will surely detract from such a cozy space. If you do make that choice, put it behind closed doors, such as an armoire.

I visualize the room as more of a reading area, or a quiet space to welcome company and have a cup of coffee or tea. I'm of the opinion there needs to be at least one room in the house for 'adults only'.

It seems when watching TV, kids have taken over every room of the house. I'm old school~~toys kept in the bedroom and brought out to the family room *only*, then taken back to the bedroom and put away. Books are the exception.
