Latest acquisition ..

My latest kitchen acquisition is an old Hoosier cabinet to use as our kitchen pantry .. I got a great deal on it! I'll post more pics when I'm done fussing with it, I'm in the middle of repainting the doors so they are off the top. These pics are to prove to my DH there is actually enough room in it to be used as a pantry.;) It needs a shelf replaced on that one side, other than that it's in awesome shape. The bottom left side will be used to store baking goods and supplies. The drawers will be good for dry spices and wraps/baggies. I have a big herb garden in these huge copper planters that I keep going most of the year, so I normally use fresh herbs, but there is plenty of room to store dry too. I also need to find a few small baskets or bins to corral lunch box stuff like loose granola bars, puddings, etc.

I am envious! I see hoosiers frequently on my CL but there is no room for one in my small kitchen. I love the green on yours and the vintage items you have on top. I would love to see it with the doors.

i-chic: That's sooo funny. As soon as you said that I flashed back on my sister's bedroom set, which was this kind of style and was white with gold accents. (Oh and as far as the other question, I'm kinda sorta pagan with some Native American and Eastern influences thrown in the mix.) Telephone table makes perfect sense. The PO had said it belonged to her grandmother so the time would be about right, too. Warm medium brown is pretty much what we had thought for the piece, too. Though if that doesn't work out and we have to paint we'll see (it won't be white with gold, though). Thanks everyone! I'll be sure to keep you updated when I get to working on it (along with all the other pieces).

vesfl, I'm so glad it is of interest. I find these things very absorbing, even when they reference growing conditions different from mine, and plants I probably couldn't grow here even if they were all still available in commerce. I do realize that Long Island NY is not in the western part of the state, but I also think you might also enjoy reading a very good article written in 1907 by Admiral Aaron Ward (whose garden, Willowmere, was in Roslyn, NY): https://books.google.com/books?id=axkiAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA43#v=onepage&q&f=false vaporvac, I don't think the 'General' is still in commerce; HMF says that Rogue Valley Roses carries it, but it isn't featured at their web site. I would call RVR to ask. I also wonder if the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden still has this rose, and if they could be lobbied to propagate it for one of their sales? It might not help you get one anytime soon, but in the long run, who knows? Virginia

Ladybugs are FORNICATING all over my Hibiscus!

The most ladybugs that I have ever seen before was back when I had moved into this high rise apartment complex in Little Rock. Out of curiosity, my roommates and I climbed the fire escape all the way up to the penthouse floor. When we got up there, there were ladybugs everywhere. Im not sure if something was attracting them or what. But for some strange reason the very top of that enclosed fire escape was like a magnet to them. It seemed like a whole colony of them was in there. We just left them alone and went back to our floor. Looking back, I wish I had taken some photos of it. I just went outside to tidy up after a strong thunderstorm came rolling through and threw everything around, and I noticed ladybugs still crawling all over my plants. Glad to see that they weren't carried off by the strong winds. Not as much damage this year, just some spilled soil all over the place. Last year I had storms smash some of my favorite glazed ceramic pots, which I'm still looking to replace. >:(

there are several cultivars of Adiantum tenerum that could fit: they all have curly serrated leaves. A. tenerum 'Lady-Moxam' or perhaps A. tenerum 'Martha's Pride' or 'Pacific May' or 'Bicolor'. hard to say without detailed photo of your leaves. this nursery in Australia has some available. this thai site has very good pics of different cultivars (you need to translate it) and it says that for example 'Martha's Pride' is a very old cultivar from Australia, and some others too.

That's a very nice looking cabinet. Does the enamel top have the original paint? Looks brand new.

Curious to know what "a good deal" would be on a cabinet these days.

I have a cabinet that I bought about 20 years ago from an antiques store. I think I got it for around $100. It still has it's flour bin inside.

I had to repaint it (red) and I used the cabinet as a decorative piece in my sons nursery. Then when he was older, in his bathroom. In our previous house, the piece was in the downstairs family room (see photo). Now, it sits in my garage. I need to get it inside. I have the perfect place for it in an upstairs den.

Thanks for the kind comments! I was very pleased to find this, I think it will look right at home in the vintage cottage kitchen I'm trying to put together.

Newhomebuilder, love your cabinet, it looked great in that room! The top does have it's original enamel on it, it's in super condition, hardly any scratches, it still really shiney .. there is one very small nick in the top, but that's the only flaw. I found this piece at a local flea market, they wanted $300 for it, but I talked them down to $240,which I thought was reasonable since it's in very solid condition.

That sounds like a fair price considering the great condition the cabinet is in. My top was not in good condition, so I re-enameled

I just noticed this on my local Craig's List. I don't think it qualifies as a Hoosier, but it's so cute! ::sigh:: I need a bigger house ...

WOW zip that is beautiful !! What are you doing to the doors? And new home that is a gorgeous room. You are so put together....sigh sigh. I can't ever get all the little bits together. Aunt jen you can't really going to be skipping that piece. it is too cute . I can see it in your house ! c

Aunt Jen, that is so, so cute! Are you sure you don't have any place to use it in your home? I love it! If you couldn't use it in the kitchen, I wonder how it would look made into a desk area, you know like a flip open desk?

Trailrunner, thanks! The doors just needed to be repainted, so I have the top doors off right now doing that. :)

I love the hoosier. We have them come up on CL from time to time at about the same price or higher. I have never seen one in such great shape though!

I love your Hoosier!I love the color of yours-so vintage! You will love playing with it! A friend has one and she was able to search antique stores to find a flour bin as well.

BTW if you cant find a vintage hoosier bin or inner parts, Van Dyke restorers sell reproduction parts, I dont know if they have the flour bin specifically but they probably do, they even sell kits to make your own reproduction hoosier cabinet.They even have reproduction hoosier cannisters etc
I cant wait to see the doors on it and how it looks in your cottage kitchen.
