Queen Anne curves & SureFit (furniture covers)

I have a lovely Queen Anne sofa and loveseat that are in excellent condition, but the material is outdated. I'd like to do SureFit furniture covers. . .I can't think of the name of these, I know they aren't furniture covers. Slip Covers! Aw, that's it. Anyhow, I asked here about using a huge tropical scene painting in one of my rooms and someone suggested slip cover the furniture in creams or whites with a splash of turqoise to match the painting. My concern is this (finally!), my sofa and loveseat are both Queen Anne style, with a curved wood leg. The slipcovers seem to be made for furniture that doesn't have exposed "legs." Even if the slipcover accommodated the exposed leg, would it bunch outward over the legs curve? Am I even making sense? Has anyone used a slipcover for a QA sofa with exposed, curved legs? Did they work?

Looking for some answers here too! :) I really can't afford a custom slipcover!

Used a basic loveseat slipcover that has ties on the back and on the arms to help it work (darker olive green velvet from Target) on our old loveseat in the bedroom. I did a LOT of tuck-and-tie-and-stretch but it is FAR from perfect! But it did help to cover it up and make it work for the moment ...... sigh.

Bet some smart company would make a profit by creating slightly stretchy slipcovers that would work for the camelback and curvy Queen Anne furniture ......

We used stretch-velvet slipcovers on our "leggy" Queen Anne settee and camelback couch - the first slipcover I got (a lovely 100%-cotton floral damask also from Surefit) would NOT fit, it slid around and bunched up despite screw pins, rubbery mesh "underlayments" and those thingies that slip down between the cushions and the couch back/sides. They were made by Surefit, although they're not on the Surefit website - there are several other stretch models on there though - I got mine at overstock.com. JCPenney also has some stretch slipcovers, and there are a bunch of web-based companies that make semi-custom ones. Google "stretch slipcover". The elasticized stretchy slipcover was able to surround the settee above the legs and stayed in place, I was able to mold the stretchy fabric over the cutback arms and camelback top reasonably well with only a bit of puckering and a few pins under the curve of the arm, and while there was some bagging in the back had I been less lazy I could have pulled the excess fabric underneath and stapled it to the frame.

I don't have any pictures though, we decided the setup wasn't going to work and replaced it with a small-scaled sectional - I'm now trying to sell the settee but may end up donating it to charity for the tax deduction.

I didn't use them but I did get some swatches from Stretch & Cover, in the soft canvas (which does come in white). The nice thing about those is that you can get separate cushion covers to match in most of their fabrics, which gives a much more tailored, custom appearance.

Magnaverde tailored a cotton Surefit slipcover for a scroll-arm camelback sofa with exposed legs by putting it on the couch inside out and sewing it to fit right on the couch, cutting off the excess, and then turning it right side out and putting it back on. He did it by hand but I'm sure it wouldn't cost much to have someone do the sewing part if you pinned it into shape with a LOT of sewing pins (like make a line with them). I found
on another thread. Looks like he stapled the fabric to the frame underneath in the front.

We have a Home Decorators Collection nearby so I was able to go by and take a look at that sofa and chair I posted. Obviously this isn't furniture built to last for 30+ years. But I am not paying the money where I would expect it to be. If this was a room that was our primary hang out space I would be willing to invest (as we are planning on doing for the family room in looking at a Hancock and Moore leather sofa.....if I can afford it), but expect this furniture to be "lightly used". I think with the addition of a couple of pillows it will be reasonably comfortable for guests and conversation (obviously not to snuggle in for a movie). I actually like the printed fabric, it appeared more of a pale blue overall appearance than the gray that I had expected. Hopefully will look OK with the hide rug (which - if not, I have already decided would look nice in the master bedroom). But fingers crossed this will all come together. I think I will likely need a different color on the walls than the Wedgewood Gray, but that can be selected later. OK - I have been looking forever for that red peacock type pillow and cant find it! I really do think that the accessories will hopefully be what ties this all together.

I recently ordered 2 different sets of slipcovers from JC Penney, and they'll all be going back! I was looking for covers for a pair of wingback chairs we bought off of CL for $50. One cover was a stretch one (SureFit), and it definitely looks cheap. The second was a cotton duck, and it is so wrinkly and ill-fitting, that it will always look like a messy slipcover (and no way I'd iron it!) So, back to the drawing board for me. I searched and searched and searched online (and posted a similar question here), and it seems that good quality, pre-made slipcovers are hard to come by. Most websites are carrying the same small handful of brands of slipcovers.

Thanks Texanjana I thought you'd appreciate how lovely your DR is going to look with lighter walls and dark cherry furniture. The rug...she has a puppy and went out and closed the doors in the DR, but forgot to lock the swinging door to the kitchen. To her horror, her puppy chewed a little piece of the Persian rug in the corner. She called her rug man, (the gentleman that sold her the rugs) he picked up the rug and took it into NYC to be weaved. They wanted 1250.00 to repair it, but he got it down to 1000.00. It was a perfect repair, you can't tell which corner was repaired. The culprit ...Atticus

Please leave the kitchen bead board alone. As others have said, it's most likely original. Agree with you that the paneling in the dining room and bathroom need to go. They are not original and are fugly. Because of the age of the house, I wouldn't paint a pure white if you redo the dining room paneling but instead something with more of a cream base. It will still read white but just a bit softer. Personally though, I'd probably just do the walls in paint or even find a beautiful wallpaper. Check out Bradbury and Bradbury wallpapers. Also we do plan on painting the homemade quasi-ugly fireplace mantel (and redo the tiles with something colorful that doesnt blend with wood - yuk). From here the fireplace and tile looks original to the house. Can you take a few closeups? If the tile is original, I certainly wouldn't cover it up. People pay huge bucks to find original tile like that. The best I can tell the trim on the floor and ceiling is original but the work around the doors is sort of junky with bad stain and has a 70's feel to it. If you're talking about the trim around the kitchen window and the trim in the dining room, from here that looks to be original and I wouldn't touch it. Be very careful about painting any original woodwork as once you do, your stuck with it. Plus for those who are looking for an original house, it will lower the sale price when you go to sell. What a gorgeous house.
