First, Laurience, it may helpful to decide what you want to do w/the window treatment you have. If you're "getting away from the Victorian look" that might be a relatively inexpensive place to start, & it would help redefine the way the room feels. You would get more impact for your dollar with that change than w/ a rug IMO. Could you see something simpler & more neutral at the window? If you're in love with & attatched to the curtains you have, then never mind, move on to the rug. Hope you don't object to the off-the-subject input.

Your room is lovely. My suggestion would be to use a traditional area rug with modern colors. I think a dark brown border with that bluish - turquoise in the pattern would be lovely. Actually you really can't go wrong because you are starting with such a neutral pallet. I would go with a traditional style wool rug because you can always use it somewhere else in the house or even sell it if you no longer need it.

Laurience, I wouldn't say you don't know what you want. It's nice to explore options & to think about different ways you can use what you have. I've seen sofas like yours used in settings that were very sleek & contemporary & I've seen them used in rooms that were very elaborate & embellished. Versatility is good!

As for your rug, this is an opportunity to bring in some accent colors! On my monitor your curtains appear to be eggplant, is that correct? How about bringing that into the rug w/ some beiges & greens, maybe? As Lesgayle said, since your current palette is so neutral you really aren't limited.

I really appreciate your feedback. The curtains are darker than eggplant. Yes, I will be looking for a beige carpet with some green and red in it.

I tried a contemporary carpet today just to see from wal-mart. No, it definitely does not work. Hopefully I can find something I like.

I would like that rug if it were black since you don't care for navy. Your furniture is very formal so I think you need to be careful what you place in there with it. I will be anxious to see what kind of suggestions you receive. Personally I wouldn't put modern, the wood finish is formal/Victorian and I don't know how you get around that

The rug I posted is actually black not navy. Interesting that it shows as Navy on Laurience's monitor. At any rate, it is not her style and I see she is looking at some other options. On another thread, Les gave her some good suggestions.
