Window treatment for flat, large window over sink

Hi all,

I just love this forum and have received so much terrific advice. Still deciding on my kitchen wall color. Next, I will need to put something on my naked kitchen window. It's a strange one; it's 58" wide, 44" high and is a slider, so it opens vertically.

One week after I purchased my little home, the house directly burned down. They are rebuilding and they have turned the house so the front of theirs is facing our backyard. Not concerned about privacy; it's only a kitchen. Ir

t had a long valance when I bought the home. Any ideas would be appreiated.

Whatever treatment you use, you probably want to be sure it won't get caught in it when sliding the window open.

You could go with a blind with a built in valance, like a woven wood blind. Or you could do a silhouette under a fabric valance that will hide completely when open, but provide privacy and light control when shut. Using a blind with a cord will help with the opening and closing as it's hard to reach over a counter....I'm presuming it's over the counter or the sink....

Did you mean to write that it opens horizontally?

A photo would be helpful.

we had the same thing in our living and dining rooms when i grew up. all the radiators had cover boxes that looked like window seats-- they were metal but painted to match the walls. my mom had box valances made for the windows that were wide enough to hang all the drapes. each side of the window had a fixed panel all the way to the floor. then she had panels made that only came to the bottom of the sill/skimmed across the top of the radiator cover-- these could be opened and closed with a traverse rod. these panels and the fixed panels were the same fabric and were all lined. she also had sheers over just the windows and each window had a pull down shade as well. in the dining room we had a triple window above a low radiator that was covered as well. we used the radiator for a sideboard. since the windows were so wide mom only had sheers and shades on the windows and fixed panels of drapes on each side with a valance going across the whole thing. are your radiators covered? a cover makes them more 'managable' when you decorate-- the look like benches or side tables. since you are looking for a formal look, using fixed panels on each side of your radiators would make sense-- above the window the rods should have a treatment that ties everything together--lamberquin, valance, swags, etc. balance the radiator on the one side of your fireplace with a side table or bookcase of the same size. diggerb

I don't have one, I have TWO of them. I ordered through Adjustaview window treatments. They custom fit them to your window and they are moveable with long cords. There is no automatic option. I have a problem of having the window over the tub and in the very front of the house. Since we have to have privacy, and I love to let in light, each day I have to climb up on our tub decking to close the three blinds. It has been a pain! I've though about putting up one long roman shade, so that I only have one string to fool with and can leave the blinds opened. Another option would be remote curtains, but they are expensive. One problem is that there is another window in the room that would need addressing to match the front window. You cannot see in this photo, but the vanity lighting is just above this window and the window also sits really close to the sink mirror, so hanging an addition curtain or shade in this area may be difficult.

I would not spend the money to get customized Roman blinds for that window unless you really like the shape of the window and want to highlight it. Just get regular blinds and have them mounted on a board at the top of the window to compensate for the thickness of the trim. It will obscure the shape on the top, but will give you good light control. You could get a pretty print. You could do the same with Venetian blinds. I like Venetian blinds for the bedroom, because you can open the slats to get in light and people can't see into your room, whereas a Roman shade has to be opened wide to get in light. One last thought. I have never had a headboard for my bed. But I have had a quilt hung on the wall over my bed for years. (It is a piece of art.) I've never had a problem. So if you allow a couple of inches between the wall the the curtains, it might work for you.

Thank you for the advice. The window actually does slide from right to left, kind of like a sliding glass door. I understand why they installed it; it's easy to open and close being over the kitchen sink.
The cord idea is great, but what do you think of vertical blinds? To me, they look commercial but they are functional. I like the look of a valance and maybe a long one would be enough?

Personally I'm not a fan of verticals....I've seen too many awful ones in too many offices to want the look at home....though others have posted pics of nicer looking ones. Also, I prefer something softer in the kitchen as so much of the kitchen is hard surfaces.

My kitchen windows are each about that size. I had nice wood blinds from Overstock, but found that blinds of that size are too heavy so I never pulled them up or down if I could help it. So DH would do it and always leave them crooked, so I had to adjust the heavy blinds.

I switched to cafe curtains on rings and an outside-mounted rod and hung the rod 3/4 of the way up each window, instead of the more common inside-mounted 1/2 way up look which I think looks more country and would make my windows look squat. I love them - so much easier to open and close, and so much cuter IMHO than the blinds. The top of the window can still open most of the way if I want air flow while the curtains are closed.

The link is an example of how mine look, except mine are hung 3/4 up the window and the link shows 1/2, and my windows are your size and over a kitchen counter, etc. I took mine down to paint the window trim, so no pics right now, sorry.
