Curtains above an inward patio door (blockout)

I want to hang some blockout/thermal curtains above the patio windowed door, off my bedroom, which happens to open inward -- this is primarily to keep light out of the room while I'm sleeping. I just installed horizontal blinds for the glass pane.

The door is next to a corner, there's several inches from the threshold to the wall Because of the blinds on the door, the curtain will need to jut out 4 1/2 or more inches. If I mount it on the drywall above the door, this will probably fall short.

So I thought about buying some wood to extend the top of the threshold frame, outward, then screw the curtains into that -- sounds like a mess! And I don't know if there are wall studs behind the area anyway.

Eventually I'll make a valance to hide the rod(s). I have a single and a double rod I can use (in case the single panels I have are not enough). I bought the Martha Stewart "floating dahlias" (green) :-) Cheap, from Home Depot.

Suggestions? This is not as simple as I thought it would be.

Thank you!
