Help with paint colors - oak cabinets slate colored tiles (PICS)
Comments (10)Juddgirl2 - Thanks for the link! I really like the Believable Buff you used. And I will check out Camelback and Whole Wheat as well. I'm still torn between a yellow (White Raisin) and a neutral for the common areas of the house. Time to get some samples and paint some large swatches! Elaine - The pictures of your house in another post is what made me want to go with White Raisin throughout! It's beautiful, I just love that color. Its warm without being too bright of a yellow. Although I love the colors in your house I think the Bamboo Shoot is a little to green for me, I'd prefer something a little more muted for my master. BM Olive Branch was my first choice but I was trying to find a similar color in Sherwin Williams since that's what the painter uses and saw Svelte Sage... not quite the same but a nice muted sage green. And the Connected Gray was one step deeper on the same strip so I thought that would go nicely in the bathroom. Lukkiirish - Thanks for the information on Restore-a-Finish. I see they have it on amazon.com so it will be easy to find....See Morequestion for live_wire_oak about in cabinet lighting
Comments (9)Yes, that's exactly what I did. They make small 2" "connectors" where you can separate the strips and turn the corners squarer, but I just ran the tape up and across and down without cutting it. You will have to drill holes in your cabinets to run the tape lights power supply back to the transformer, but they are small holes. If you have an extra touch up kit, you won't even "see" them at all, even in reflection.. Treat the cut edges with the stain pen or putty. To "double back" and light under the glass cabinet, I used a connector at the end with an attached lead that then tucks up next to the tape lights and attaches to a separate piece of tape light under the glass cabinet. I didn't use light rail here, and had to drill holes between the eges of the cabinets to keep the run going under them. If I'd used a light rail, it would have been a simple matter to just attach the tape light to the light rail instead of drilling the cabinets. I wanted to show how they would look both with and without light rail, so I have another vignette that shows them with the light rail. With a light rail and up lighting, as well as corner cabinet lit. Also, this is the "warm" lighting, where the white kitchen uses the "cool" temperature. (Except for under the grey wood cabinets. I used warm there, to showcase the difference in look.)...See MoreDisappointed about painting oak cabinets
Comments (30)"I had thought I decided to add hardware and wait until after the floors are finished, new ss appliances are in, new counter top is installed and hope that I wouldn't even care anymore about the cabinets but then today I started seeing some beautiful white cabinets." FutureMrsR, I think your heart is speaking pretty plainly here. From all the other posters, it sounds like there is significant work involved but that good results are possible. The problem I have with your plan is that let's say you put in new hardware, floors, appliances and countertops, but in the end, you still want painted cabinets. You have just made your job harder. You've got to sand and use lots of TSP and other chemicals on the cabinets and not get any of it on your brand new floor. You also would have a MUCH easier time prepping and painting those cabinets if your counters were off. Also, you've got to unscrew all that new hardware off the doors. Better to fill all those new holes in the doors and reattach the hardware in another spot after the prep and painting is done. Sorry to play devil's advocate....See MoreWhat kind of paint should I use to paint oak kitchen cabinets?
Comments (24)bbstx, thank you so much for the tips. I have some other remodeling to be done by contractors. These days, I have been busy buying lights and materials for bathroom remodeling. Sorry for my late response. For the kitchen cabinets, I will paint them myself. screedesq, thank you very much for sharing your experience, which is very helpful. I'll use the Benjamin Moore Advance Simply White Semi Gloss. For the primer, I'll use Sherwin Williams PrepRiteProBlock latex primer. The sales lady recommended SW premium wall wood primer. But according to bbstx's referred post, the former should be better. I have the external hinge of bronze color. Did you have the same? Did you change them to stainless steel? I don't know if it would be a good idea to change them to internal hinge and if it would be an easy job. Did it take you a lot of time to degloss and sand the cabinets? Did you use a rotary orbital sander to do the job? The contractor who is going to remodel my house suggested Rust-Oleum Transformations. I doubt it would produce the same good result as SW preprite problock latex primer + BM advance? Really appreciate your help....See Morebigdoglover
