spray paint uneven

I just got through painting an old iron headboard with Krylon indoor satin spray paint (bronze) and the outdoor patio table with the outdoor spray paint and they both have come out looking uneven. DH thinks it's no big deal and can only see it from different angles but I can see it very well. Do you think a clear coat would help? any ideas would be much appreciated.

tfm, by any chance did you paint it where it was really hot, or outside where there was a breeze?

I painted a chest outside and it wasn't at all even. Even working first thing in the morning (still 90 degrees) the spray seemed to dry in the air on the way to the chest. Once we moved it into the garage and cooled down the garage, it did fine.

did you keep the can moving back and forth up and down the whole time? I'd review spray paint tips on the web and then give it another coat. I don't think clear will help any.

Thanks jaysmom, I did keep the can moving but lots of curves and swirls on the headboard so made it very tough

Leave them if they are in decent shape. They are a classic style. I have very similar black stools with white ice granite, & white shaker cabs. And three kids ages 11, 9 and 5. Your kids are even younger, so the chairs are still going to withstand a few years of abuse and I think painting them will only leave them more susceptible to chipping and scuffs because you'll be refinishing over a factory finish. I say leave them, let them get good and dinged up in the next few years (mine are from Target and are surprisingly forgiving to scratches and chips). Then replace them all together - maybe with an updated style - when you decide to do a kitchen refresh in a few years.

As someone who has painted several wicker pieces....not the same as cane...but very similar...I say brush. The first piece I did, i went from dark green to white.....and sprayed and sprayed.....and there was always a bit of dark in the creases....finally used a brush with thinned down paint...oil base.....and got it all white.

Thanks, All! These are the only images I have for the moment. It’s a 3.5 hour drive, but I‘m headed back on Monday, so I could provide better pictures then. Additionally, the original laminate appears to be a bright, fake teal marble, so I‘m trying to make it so I can re-paint the surface using appropriate materials (a laminate kit) without making the situation worse. You will also need to use a high quality primer once you have used the sheetrock mud on it, and sanded it smooth. Clean it well, so no dust, and primer it, and then paint it. It will need two coats of paint. When you do the second coat, you will probably need to do the entire wall, because, it will show differently on your wall.

How many coats did you use and did you prime first? If it had worn areas and you didn't prime, then I'd spray on a coat of primer and start over. You'll need at least 2-3 coats for a nice finish.

It also helps to rotate the item being sprayed. Some coats with the headboard right side up and some with the headboard upside down. Make sure to allow enough time for each coat to dry completely.

I agree with Annz and Chispa, though you may not need to prime over you do need more coats and spray each additional coat after moving the objects upside, on their sides and what ever angle you can get them to sit still.

If you still can't get it even I'd consider using a brush on poly.

I painted the trim for my island black. I didn't feel like running out to buy a quart of paint and I wanted it to match my spray painted black bar stools (if I could do over I would've since I spent so much time trying to get it even) so I used the spray paint I had on hand. Well I couldn't get it even no matter how hard I tried. I finally brushed on a coat of satin poly and it was fixed. Now, the problem with doing that is if I ever want to repaint, I'll need to get the poly off first.

Probably not the right way to do it but I believe it would take care of the uneven problem.

also don't try to get coverage with one coat, it's better to do a few thinner coats and build up the coverage so you don't get runs. Keep the can the same distance from the object as you move the can, so don't swing the can from side to side, move the can in a straight line so you're spraying from the same distance as you move along.
