Veneer Stone - Which Shape & Color is Best for My House
Comments (16)Are those cultured stone? They look good enough to not hit my faux stone button. :) There may be a stigma associated with fake stone, but not the veneer stuff that is real stone. I'm a brick person, I'm a stone person. And there is certainly ugly brick out there. Yours might not be as nice in person as it looks in the photo but from here it looks like the good stuff, well laid out, in nice colors. A deep foresty or blackish green trim might blend the brick with roof colors, especially if you go with a darker grey. Some roof colors are off-limits in some climates of course... Brick is good with your house because it's such a classic style, the horizontal brick contrasting with the pointy gothic peak. It's just a very pleasing pattern, and if you do stone, I'd prefer it in your first two styles. But really, even they are almost too natural and unstructured. They'd be okay, but I personally would direct my efforts at something else. Okay, cuz I like it. But we really need a wide shot from the street that shows more of the front of the house I think! As far as I know, you have a stone garage or pagoda wing or something. That might change my feelings about the brick. When I was trying to pick out a trim color for a brick/stucco/wood trim house, I sort of enjoyed looking at the "historically appropriate" colors from the local historic commission....See Morewhich stone do you like better for the fireplace?
Comments (30)This post has more pics of your space which I think are helpful in deciding what will work. I *love* the stone on the right, but I wonder if it would be too much small rectangles going on with the backsplash you have (which is beautiful, BTW!) So I guess my vote is for the one on the left. I wish I could see them both photoshopped! Here is a link that might be useful: Srg's thread with pics...See MoreWhich exterior is better?
Comments (27)The roof drainage issue is serious and obvious. Where the roof of the angled wing meets the main roof, a "valley" is formed and water will drain to it from both roofs. Where that valley ends the gutter must be designed to take the increased flow. In your case, that point is also where the valley from the roof of the nested cross gable and entry portico meets the gutter line. Allowing so much water to meet the gutter at one point is a mistake only an amateur would overlook but you will see it on many internet designs. Frankly, I have never believed many internet designs are made by experienced designers or design professionals. Get rid of the bend and everything will fall into place. Ask your insurance company about a discount for a hipped roof; it may not apply to a one story house in your area. At any rate, the risk is that a gable wall might separate from the roof at the rake in high winds. In my experience, that is primarily an increased risk for roofs built of trusses. IMO if that connection is properly reinforced it is not an increased risk since the rake only needs to stay intact until the rest of the roof fails. I recommend well nailed 3/4 plywood roof sheathing and full coverage Ice & Water Shield underlayment....See MoreWhich of these 8 samples of LVP flooring goes with my maple cabinets??
Comments (17)[Note: The numbering used in this comment refer to the original post, as Hillcrest and Elgin Oak have swapped positions in the subsequent post of den photos.] #1 Elgin Oak has my vote, and here's why: I'm not a fan of the board stripes of #4, English Breakfast. (You want attention to be drawn out the windows to your lake view -- not to your floor's stripes.) #3 Fawn has a more uniform coloration than #4, but is a pinky brown, a fact which is accentuated next to the gray. #2 Hillcrest looks pinky brown next to the gray, too, wheras the gray just makes #1 Elgin Oak more golden. #1 Elgin Oak includes the Maple cabinetry's golden yellow in its coloration, and is the brightest option (if you are trying to keep the space light & bright). A previous poster asked about going darker with the flooring, and you may want to try that before making a selection. (Unless you already know you want a light floor.)...See Moredeeinohio
