I really love it with your colors-- I think it looks great in the dining room but I'd be tempted to put it in a more prominent position.. like in the LR either to the right of the piano or behind the black chair on the fireplace side of the room. The style isn't an obvious fit but IMO it's the deviations from a style that give a room personality and soul.

Art doesn't have to match the furniture style, so I see no reason not to use it. I think it is a very cool piece!

My first thought, tho, would be to use it over the fireplace, to bring some color and height there. However, it may be too long to fit. In that case, I think it works well on the DR wall. Please don't hang anything around it tho - let it have the space by itself. It is like a great piece of modern art, and the eye needs breathing room around it.

Also, when you hang it, be sure that you have a rod that keeps it sitting out away from the wall. Look for a tapestry rod. You want air to circulate behind the piece to keep mildew and bugs from being trapped back there between the tapestry and the wall.

Thinking of the LR, I just wonder if you would consider taking the rocker and using that by the fireplace, and putting the two red print chairs on either side of the LR, where the rocker and the black chair are now. Then put the taupe chair down by the piano on the left. Put the wood side table between the taupe chair and the red chair on the left. Switch the low red lamp on the closer end of the couch with the lamp by the fireplace. The rocker seems to belong by the fireplace, and doesn't seem to fit as well imo in the LR space. It is also kind of disconcerting to have the two print chairs separated in that way.

It's beautiful. Wonder what it would look like hung horizontally unfolding from left to right over the piano? If that works, then you can place the one over the piano over the fp. The tapestry may also work horizontally over the fp if the wall is wide enough.

Have you ever tried switching the table and upholstered chair to the other side of the fp? Any maybe try the rocker where the table and chair currently is. If you like that then you can put your tan upholstered chair where the rocker is. Just a thought so you can see what you find most pleasing.

Oh yes, I think it works well on that wall.

I like it a lot and think it would go well in your house. Wherever it goes, however, it should be the only piece on that section of wall. For that reason, I don't like the idea of placing it on the dining room wall with family photos.

Is there room for it in the dining room but on the opposite wall - to the left of the french doors? The curio cabinet would have to move to the left corner of the room.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. Many of you have suggested that (if we leave it on the DR wall) it be the only piece on the wall. I think you are right (darn, I will have to find another place for all the photos . . .)

In terms of putting it over the the fireplace (the existing piece IS too small), the tapestry only would work if placed horizontally. I will give it a try, though.

In terms of other locations, there really just isn't room. The room isn't large and has big windows. This wall in the DR, however, is very prominent -- one of the first thigns you see when you come in the front door.

When the taupe chair comes back from the shop, I will try out the room re-arrangement suggestions of Les and abundantbessings. In general, I find that having the red print chairs close to one another seems "noisy" for me, so I have separated them. But I will give it another try. You always have such great suggestions. Ah well that's the information we can't see in a photo-- if the DR wall is the first thing you see when entering then it is the perfect place for it. It will look great when raised just a bit.

I like the tapestry on the DR wall better than having the family photo collection there. The tapestry makes a softer impression while adding some bold color punch. I think it is an excellent find for the room.

The reason I suggested the other two locations is that both have enough black already to carry the impact of the wonderful bold tapestry. Hung vertically, it seems too narrow on your DR wall. Try hanging horizontally on that wall without any other pix. Consider adding a glass topped narrow console below to provide provide weight, balance as well as a handy serving platform along with a tall airy plant in the corner where you currently have an extra chair.

I think it goes nice in the Din Rm. Oh and I really love your Shaker Rocking chair!

I am also going to try graywing's suggestion (moving the curio cabinet to kiddie corner on the tapestry wall and putting the photos to the left of the french doors.) Unfortunately, the room is too wide to follow abundant's other suggestion "add a glass topped narrow console below." I know this would look good and be practical, but we can't do it as long as we keep that round table (which we are attached to).

eandhi, yes that old rocker has been with us for well over 20 years. We made it from a kit and I changed the tape recently. It is a silly piece and really doesn't "go" with the room, but it is lightweight, easy to move around and comfortable.

That is one fabulous piece of art! I absolutely love it, and think it works nicely in your dining room -- although I would like to see how it looks horizontally, both in your DR and over your fireplace, just for grins.

I am with abundant and delta -- it is a strong piece that should carry a wall on its own, but that dining room wall is very horizontal and the piece is very vertical.

I'm not sure that the design on the tapestry will work horizontally. Hung as intended it reads as a rug or scroll. Hung horizontally, it may read as a flag, but an oddly unfurling flag. But I'd have to see it to be sure.

I am with jakabedy. The direction of the tapestry needs to be vertical - it is as if the design is a waterfall of fabric unrolling. Sideways, I think it will look odd, almost like a piece of that ribbon candy that they sell at Christmas.

I don't think it is too small to be alone on the DR wall. Once it is hung at the right height, with tapestry rod, it will have a lot of visual presence in the otherwise neutral space. Like a piece of modern art, you don't want to visually clutter the area around it, imo.

It will also have more impact when you take off the tablecloth and just have the pretty, simple wood of the table showing.

I've not been to Peru so DeltaBreeze and others may be far more knowledgeable about the culture. Nor am I an archeologist. I do know their traditions were largely passed orally, but evidence of their hieroglyphs suggest that as with other early cultures the symbols can be read horizontally before vertically. Many early pictographs read horizontally; think of scrolls or pictographs in caves across the globe.

That's not to say that's how these symbols are to be read, but just as with many Persian, Asian and other tribal rugs and textiles, transferware and Imari patterns, there is often a story being told by what some perceive as merely pretty designs.

I cannot say there is a right or wrong way to hang the tapestry, or even that the symbols are interpretable, but my philosophy is it's always best to keep an open mind when approaching anything . What I think of as a scroll is another's fabric unfurling or someone else's strange flag. Regardless of our interpretations and suggestions, it's a piece of art awaiting DeltaBreeze's experimenting to see what she thinks is most effective on her wall.

Interesting discussion! The tapestry picture is a woven Wari belt. (The Waris were the dominent civilization in Peru before the Incas and before the Spanish came) and yes, it is "supposed" to hang vertically--as if the belt is unwinding. My dear husband (who doesn't often voice strong opinions) really wants to keep the tapestry vertical (the way the weaver displayed it) -- so I think that is what we will do. The piece is made in part with baby alpaca wool, so the wool has a bit of a sheen.

Question for you all. I have been doing a crash course in tapestry hanging (thank you Les for getting me started). It seems that the best option (least stressful for the tapesty) would be much pricier than I thought ($265). It is by www.displayaway.com. The rod can be made in the same dark cherry as my furniture. Do you think this makes sense? It is way more $$$ than I thought it would be. Here is the rod in a lighter wood color. It is 2 inches deep.

I'll show you what my dad made for me, for a Navajo rug that I wanted to hang. He built a kind of frame that floats out from the wall a bit, and on the wood in the center are multiple pieces of velcro that I can just smooth my rug onto to hold into place safely and securely. Sorry the first pic of the frame itself is so dark -- it's in my hallway and was a bit hard to get a good photo of. The second shows how the rug hangs on it. I really like this solution a lot. You don't really see the frame itself when you're looking at the rug straight on, and even from the side it has a nice look.

Many thanks, DB. for providing the piece's provenance. It's always helpful to learn the meanings behind indigenous works. Now that you and DH have decided the way you want to display your tapestry, just be sure to use acid-free materials and paint the mounting boards to conserve the wool. Velcro on framing board as suggested in the previous post is considered a good way to distribute the weight.
