Sisal is more scratchy and the sea grass, when you first get it has a distinctive smell, and they complain about that too. Most husbands will always find a reason to not like them. Terrible to make the generalization, but I found this to be true 9 out of 10 times. I would recommend going to West Elm, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware or Crate & Barrel furniture stores and let your husband see and touch them and hope you can swing the decision.

There are some indoor/outdoor rugs that are woven to replicate the look and those are not tough on the tootsies.

That was what I was afraid of. Do you have any links to the look a likes? He just wants to get a carpet cut and bound for new house. I want more texture in there. Thanks for the answer. What do you think about carpet cut and bound. I want to eventually get a nice wool rug but with other new house cost can not do it right now.

Sarina, I have the same concerns as you, although it's just myself I have to please! I haven't done much investigating yet, but I am thinking about having a wool sisal carpet cut and bound. Seems to me it would be the best of both worlds, the texture of the sisal but the softness of wool and the ability to get the exact size I need. I wonder if anyone has done this and whether they like it?

I've had both, seagrass and sisal. Sisal stains easily. Seagrass lasts, is durable, and has an open feel. Yes, it's uncomfortable and scratchy underneath.

I just recently bought one seagrass rug and one jute rug off of Ebay from Natural Area Rugs (I think). The seagrass rug is in our primary living area which is really lived in as in to the extreme. It has been in place for about three months and is so easy to care for. It shows no stains and is not the most comfortable under foot but will do considering its wear capabilities. This replaced a sisal rug that was here before (from Lowes I believe) and after approximately a year and a half or two years it had to be pitched. It did not wear well at all and was extremely stained. That sisal rug replaced a jute rug (from Ballard) that was in the space for about three years but shed like crazy. I loved that jute rug for the look, but it was a pain the umhum to keep up. The shedding alone was like having two extra heavily shedding dogs in the house. It stained easily as well. I can't remember what the final issue was for us to throw it out, but it eventually did get the boot.

The jute rug I just bought is for our den which is currently used primarily is our youngest son's play room. It is holding up remarkably well and isn't shedding like the other jute we had. It is also extremely comfortable under foot which is also the opposite of the original jute. I know you didn't ask about jute specifically, but my point in including it is that I think all differ in wear and feel not only by the type of grass but by the type of weave and the manufacturer as well.

We both like the way they feel, one in bedroom and one runner in the hall...BUT, the edges curl up over time. One is Pottery Barn and the other i am not sure. Different brands though.
Not all the way around...just a 12 inch spot on both...so it trips you. They are thick and have the rubber backing and still curl up right on the fabric edge. I got them to help keep an elder pup from slipping on the wood floors, and now he trips!
An edged carpet of similar weave would be better.

I have bought a seagrass rug at Natural Area rug when it was on sale. It has performed exceptionally well under our breakfast table where we eat all our meals. The only dirt is on the fabric edging.
