Opinions on my sofa/pillow choices.

Ok, I have posted before looking for how to arrange the furniture in these rooms. We finally did the mock up with paper and have the pieces picked out. Now we need colors.

Family room. Furniture is very clean lined with the arms being square giving it a more contemporary, clean look. We were thinking of sofa/loveseat being a tan similar to the tan in our entryway. That seemed boring so we thought charcoal would be fun. We have nothing charcoal or grey in our home so that was just poopy. Now we are thinking instead of tan going a bit darker and using a taupe that matches the tan of the entryway. The dog bed actually has a taupe bottom which we think might be the shade. We are thinking it will look nice with floors, rug and marble around fireplace. We were thinking the pillows could be sample number one. The rug stays, everthing else goes.

Formal livingroom.

We have picked out an oatmeal sofa and loveseat. Very clean lines but the arms with be rounded, a bit more formal than family room sofa. We need an accent chair and will cover it with same fabric as pillows on sofa. What do you think of the second sample choice? Or do you like any of the other samples instead. The wallpaper in the dining room has red berries within the vines/branches. The rug is not staying. Everything else goes. Everything in dining room stays.

Probably not very helpful answer, but I think they would all work nicely. You are right to bring some pattern in. But I wouldn't match pillows and chair exactly. Just similar.

I personally am not crazy about the squares sample, but thats me. The last sample, I think the white background is wrong. The third one may be too large a scale, but the colors seem to connect to the dining room well. I think #5 may be my pick but I do like #2 a lot too. Not sure if I would want those warm/reddish/coral/brick (???) colors permanently in a chair.

In any case, I think you need to nail down the sofa/loveseat color definitively while you pick the accent colors. Maybe even get the sofa/loveseat in the room first if those logistics work out??

I counted wrong. I meant #6 as fave not #5.

Surprised no one else has chimed in. Its a fun choice.

Don't buy anything you can not touch and inspect first. A $2,500 sectional is pretty expensive. Make certain it is better quality than the Ashley furniture you could buy three of for $2,500. Honest. You MUST inspect the sectional first and be able to tell it is superior to the cheaper ones. Or else there is no point in paying more than $899 for one.

haha kmcg.. I am real!! (pinching self) I do get the life/schedule changing thing-- as I also just returned to work. They don't let us ease into it, darn it.. they slam us with it. I am just glad that you made as much progress as you did in your time off-- each addition to your lr, study and guest room has made a big difference. Unfortunately, I have created more problems and more projects with the bits I did in my time off haha. One more thought-- the more I open and read this thread the more sure I am that the original pillows don't "feel" like your room-- the "new" ones you ordered are perfect. Cant wait to see the dog pound grow!

In my opinion it is the pillow in the back (striped) that is blah. I like the textured pillows. How about another pillow in cream or an accent color to go with the textured pillow?

Pull furniture away from the walls for more flexibility in creating conversation areas. For example, use a sofa to divide space in a room.

wendy- we kinda like 6 also, it reflects the gold colors and even though it is very olive the sheen keeps you guessing.

cristoper- Not sure if you can tell from pics but the olive sofa in family room is literally floating in the middle of the fam/kitchen. In the formal you might notice the newspaper on the floor. We are floating the love seat so you can (well actually so our german shephard can) get to the windows. We had the sofa floating in that spot for a while and it looked nice. We tried dividing the liv/dining but it just did not feel right.

I am not an expert - designer challenged I would say - but your DR wallpaper looks traditional to me - especially the pattern on the bottom half of the wall. I see you have arts and craft style furniture - kind of a pottery barn look there. I think something that would really tie in the colors of blacks and tans would look nice with an accent color to liven it up. I like the floral #3- with what you have but the scale of the pattern looks too large.

You refer to the space with the new couch and loveseat as formal (and clearly the DR is traditional in feel), yet I think your fabric choices, while very nice, are also very casual and modern.

If you want a more formal feel, I think you need to find a more traditional pattern. If you prefer geometrics (as the fabrics would suggest), I would look for something like a plaid or herringbone or diamond pattern.

Hey les, long time. Yes, the space is the formal living room but I don't literally mean formal. It should actually be called the unused room. lol.

We really like the dining room but want the rest of the house to look more casual/modern yet look nice against the traditional dining. I know that is probably not easiest thing to accomplish which is why I came here for some advise.

I think you are right about the more geometric thing. The fabric of the sofa is a microfiber that actually has a tiny herringbone pattern to it, so it is not just a flat color. It adds some texture to a rather flat fabric. The samples we found for chair and pillows is from the sofa manufacturer. I think we need to look at other brands fabric and then see what type of chair we can get from them. I think limiting ourselves to this brands fabric is not wise.

See the little brown squares on the bottom of your pillow fabric? Could you do the chair in that brown tweed like fabric??

Yes I could. I think that is why I need to look at swatches and then see what kind of chair can be made from it.
The last sample actually would work with the dark taupe sofa in family room but would look horrid with the rug.

I know I do things backwards. I love my rug and wallcolors which has limited me in some ways.
