Buffet is done!! Antique mahogany gone lilac.

I'm so in love with her. :)

I had a dining room thread going for a while with all your help in choosing craigslist chairs. Towards the end of that thread I showed an inspiration buffet, and some of you hated the buffet altogether, some liked it and thought it should be aqua, and others joined my crazy train and got on board with the lilac. nonetheless, she was meant to be lilac, at least while she lives with me.

here is the before and after. i added 3 appliques as well.

OMG she is fabulous!!! I love the appliques, too! They look like they've been there all along.

edited to add: I just read your blog post about your start to finish. Now I appreciate the finished product even more!

That hutch is 1930's furniture....machine made all the way. The "mahogany desk" is hand made. However after looking at lots of pictures, I think it would be what is often called a "hunt board"..smaller than a sideboard, a Southern thye of piece...and that bowed front is very typical of a Hepplewhite style huntboard or sideboard. The bow front and the tapered legs say "Hepplewhite style" and the hand done dovetails scream hand made. That's not to say that furniture made since the beginning of the industrial revolution weren't hand made, but those dovetails strongly hint at pre Civil War. Arts and crafts? For sure not likely....unless it was a custom made piece with some designers idea of mixing Hepplewhite styling with Arts and Crafts carvings. It's really lovely....I wish I could see it in person....something about it hints to me that there may have been modifications made? What does the back of the piece look like? Linda C

Thanks, holiday-ers, for your gracious comments....Fiddle-dee-dee! (as Scarlett would say!) OA..yes, that is an original of First Day Issue (usually in plastic in notebook on GWTW baker's rack...after my Dad died & Mom had given me the plates, I got really interested in GWTW memorablia...& I bid on a few things on e-bay...my fav things I bid on were B&W 8x10 prints..I have 6 altog but 1 of them is vintage...copyright 1954, R54/204...I love old B&W prints! OA...the stemware...glassware is very old ... gifted to me by my Mom yrs ago who saved it for me in cedar chest until I had a home of my own...so I think maybe produced late 1940's or early 50's).. I've broken some & tried to replace: Got excited cause thought I had found the same thing one day on lunch hour from work & went back & bought after work...had Star of David on base...but diff stems...think they are old, too, but don't know cause I don't know ID of either one...I'll attach link below to Oct 10 Guardian Angel t'scape that shows pics. Frou...Carol Burnett reference, too funny! Must see that again! The gold flatware is a set of 12 ...& it's my friend's GS find...& she dug it out cause said it would be perfect for GWTW t'scape! I thought so, too! Like, OA, I would love to find a few pcs! Here's a fork & spoon serving pc I have in the Lariat bowl on buffet: Dollbaby certainly was pea green with envy as you said earlier about candy's GD's high chair! Ladies, you are pumping me up with happiness. I can't tell you how much I enjoy working with these chairs and my beloved fabrics. Allison, there was about a 6" long chunk of wood gone from the upright support of that broken arm in the 'doggie chair'. That 2 part product is mold-able like clay and I just got it as close to the shape as I could, pressed it onto the arm, and let it set up overnight. I then sanded and carved it down a bit to match the other arm. I'll have to see if I have a before pic of that and then take one now. Oh, I also plan to use that product to make new tops above the arms where you see the holes in the natural wood in the 2nd pic below. That's where the original horizontal top was attached. (a bit cut off in the CL ad pic) Part of that top is now mounted inside the upper back, padded and covered with fabric. Sujafr, here is the blue one a bit further along, although I just propped the being re-glued arms in place for this shot, which I sent to the seller. I found a solid Waverly twill that matches the darker blue in the fabric, and will have welt outlining the upholstered parts for a crisp definition. You can just see it at the top where I pinned it. patty-cakes, I'll keep them for a little while, just to enjoy the fruits of my labor/fun, and then try to find good homes for them. I might list a few on Craigslist!

Absolutely. You also have a lot of options about how to decorate it. A large mirror, picture, or collection above. The surface can hold a collection or seasonal vignettes...especially since we are getting close to Thanksgiving and Christmas. Or one large piece, maybe pottery with branches. So many possibilities! My grandma gave me the buffet from her old dining set that I used in the LR for our TV. It's in the dining room, now, waiting for harvest inspiration from me. As long as you have room for them, they can be quite versatile. The defeated army under the side table made me laugh! I have the same thing in my living room :D

I love lilac, and love your buffet. I have painted my dining table and benches lilac a few days ago, it is a beautiful and underutilized color.

Omg, that is so fantastic! I love how you distressed it. I have an old jam cupboard/sideboard (?) as well as a table that I have been thinking about doing that to, but haven't gotten up the nerve.

When I was younger, my father and grandmother went through the phase when they would buy painted antique furniture and go through the painstaking process of removing the paint and refinishing it. Because of this, I am having a hard time going ahead and painting these pieces. Maybe I should buy something to practice on until I get my nerve up.

One question, when you said you used a deeper base, was the base a primer?

thank you everyone! i'm thrilled she's getting a positive response, but the truth is it wouldn't matter either way - i love her THAT much. hehe isn't it fun when that happens?

Debra - I didn't prime this piece at all. I made my own chalk-like paint using plaster of paris in a deep purple as a base coat to show through where i distressed, and i also left the inside cabinets the deeper color for some fun contrast.

NSM - these appliques came from Homedepot.com (my local stores don't stock them) because I wanted something very traditional as though it could have been original to the piece. I've also purchased great appliques (good quality flexible resin and great variety) from doityourselfchic.com but those tend to be more "shabby chic" with florals and laurels and ribbons.

Wow!! Wow!!

I admit, as I was reading along, and saw the lovely wood finish, I cringed before scrolling down further .... at the thought of lilac, and painting the piece. But I love it! You did a wonderful job -- great shade of lilac, and the appliques look perfect! I also love the not-heavy-handed distressing.

Very impressive, thanks for sharing. This is going in my inspiration files. :)

She is beautiful! I have a similar buffet that I purchased just before we moved to use as an entry table and planned on painting white. She is too big for my planned space, so right now I have it in the living area. I am waiting on a color to speak to me before I paint! Seeing your beautiful piece makes me want to cancel plans for the weekend so I can stay home and paint! You did a wonderful job!

As a person who just painstakingly painted a patio groove ceiling and the walls for the first time in thirty three years, pulse painted two fuax rattan chairs plus am now painting two sets of four panel room dividersÃ¢ÂÂ¦well letÃ¢ÂÂs just say that I can appreciate the time, conscientiousness and artful thinking you put into that little beauty!

now i'm just waiting on amazon to finally deliver my pneumatic staple gun so i can reupholster the drexel heritage dining chairs. i refinished them a month ago! then the furniture for my future dining room will be complete! i'm going to do a big piece of art too so maybe i won't call it complete until that's done. haha

the projects are stacking up though - gotta keep moving!

oh, i forgot to mention, i jumped the gun posting this buffet because i'm in the process of lining all the drawers with deep purple velvet. :) i'll post a quick pic of that when i share my chairs.
