It's just blatant stupidity and the desire to sell what ever they have in stock. First off, there's no restriction on how close your maintenance disconnect can be. That just has to be in sight of the person who is working on the spa equipment. The thing that has to be at least five feet away and in signt of the USERS of the spa, is the emergency pump stop. If this is a single family home, you're NOT required to have one of those. The GFCI can be anywhere in the circuit (either in the main panel or at the disconnect), but it's almost always cheaper to put it in the custom little disconnect box they sell for spas. There's so much involved to getting things RIGHT that use a large amount of electricity that you are going to stick you and your loved ones wet bodies into, if you are not familiar with the full Article 680 of the NEC, don't screw around. Get an electrician to do the whole thing. He's going to take one look at your cob job attempt to get up to the panel and either start over or go home at that point any how....See MoreHot Tub wiring addition
Comments (8)I am out of space in my house panel...so, can't add a breaker there. I don't want to add a breaker in the garage because then I would have to dig a trench back to the hot tub and lay another 50-foot cable run in parallel to the current 100A feed. The hot tub is sitting right next to the spot where the cable to the garage exits the side of the house. However, adding a breaker to the garage and running it back to the hot-tub may be the "most legal" solution and would omit the need for the new sub-panel. If I do go with the sub-panel approach, I am concerned about whether I need to upgrade the breaker in the house main panel to 150A. I don't plan to run heavy loads in the garage at the same time that the hot tub is running. I plan to read the hot-tub specific section of the NEC before I start. Thanks for all of your inputs! Please keep them coming! :)...See MoreHot Tub wiring question
Comments (8)Thanks for all the information / help. It is greatly appreciated!!! I have calculated the voltage drop using the equation reference above and using another have found. Using the calculator above, I get the following results (200' run, 50A, 240V): #6 9.5V drop 4% #4 6.0V drop 2.5% The other formula I used gave slightly lower results. It seems like 4% is real borderline. I will check the distance and if less than 200', might consider #6. My understanding is a max of 3% for the sub so that the total does not exceed 5%. I am on a dedicated transformer providing a 200A service within 100' of the home. Have no idea the size of the feeder line. The house is all electric but is not large as it is a weekend place. Thanks,...See MoreHot Tub Wiring
Comments (2)SOOW is a cord type not cable. Other than that Randy is right. You can not use cords to connect either the spa to the disconnect or the disconnect to the rest of the house wiring. Vats of water that you are going to immerse yourself and your family in are not things you should be randomly screwing around with when you don't know what you are doing. There are very specific requirements for the wiring to spas/hot tubs. It is almost certain that the out door part of the run to the disconnect and the connection between the disconnect and the tub itself will be required to be suitable conduit with suitable conductors including INSULATED equipment grounding conductors inside. Most new spas/hot tubs will have rather explicit requirements for wiring that you (or your contractor) should be following without making goofy substitutions....See Morepetey_racer
