25 year old house-ground or neutral wire?

I am replacing a couple lights in a 25 year old house. When I took down the old light, it had a wire (no color- just 'sorta beige', that was attached to a screw on the bracket. I thought this was a ground. When I put the new, green, ground to it, and attachted them together with a nut, did the black to black, whit to white- I was careful to have wires capped tight, with no wire showing. When I turned the light in, it gave a flash, then did not turn on. I think the flash was from behind the mount- not at bulb level. Because the house is older- might what I thought was a ground be a neutral? If so, how do I go about this? do I put the neutral back to a screw? If so, what do I do with the green ground from the new light? I will also find out if the bulb is good. Thanks- I don't want any curly hair!
