Hosed off the fake palm... will the bottom dry!?

Those of you that hate silks might want to just turn away. :)

My large, fake palm was dusty. I read on here before that someone actually hosed theirs off. I just did that but didn't put much thought into the process. I sprayed mine while standing up. After I was all done, I realized the moss in the plastic pot was really wet and I think there's a styrofoam piece in the bottom. Will this dry out if I leave it outside all day? I don't need to have problems with mold.

It was a gift from my Grandparents because they knew I wanted a fake tree for the LR and I know it wasn't cheap so the idea of tossing it isn't real appealing.

Can you lift the tree out of the pot? That's what I would try to do. Then separate the pieces if possible. Let them sit in the sun as long as it takes to completely dry out.

If it won't come out, what type of pot is it in? Ceramic? Airy basket? If it's in a basket, I'd also lay it on its side so the sun can hit the bottom. I'd also do this for several days, rotating the plant.

There really shouldn't be any initial wetting issues with the gritty mix like there can be when other soils, including the 5:1:1 mix are allowed to dry down too much. Here's how that works: Consider that all ingredients are as dry as they get, especially the bark, as that is the only component that will exhibit any hydrophobia (water repellency). When you wet a completely dry gritty mix, the Turface immediately absorbs water like a sponge and becomes saturated, while the surfaces of the granite also become coated with water. This is always enough water to sustain the plant AND for some of the water to 'break' the hydrophobia of any bark that WAS water-repellent as water vapor diffuses from other colloidal surfaces into the bark within 10-15 minutes, leaving the soil uniformly damp/moist. This occurs much faster when the bark fraction isn't allowed to dry down much below 30% so the bark is never hydrophobic. If you ARE watering in a plant in a completely dry soil, it's probably a good idea to just water again an hour or so after the initial watering to make sure the soil didn't become TOO dry as water diffused from (primarily) the Turface into the dry bark. That said, when I do my repots, I have a tub of water nearby always, that is partially filled with a water/Superthrive solution - like what Al suggested. I set the pot in the shallow water in the tub and gradually fill it up to the soil level & leave it set in the water while I go about doing the next repot - then I remove the soaking pot & put the next pot in its place. It will vary depending on the soil content but in my experience with my soil 1 hose for a 4' wide bed would never work. The water, thanks to gravity, disperses down faster than it does out to the sides. So I'd end up with over-watered plants right by the hose and underwatered plants off to the sides. I need at least 2 hoses for 4' and using 3 hoses works even better and gets me more uniformity of moisture. Plus jnj hit the nail on the head - water pressure. Soaker hoses work best with a pressure reducer on the faucet. The lower pressure not only allows for better distribution from side-to-side but also end-to-end. otherwise you end up over-watered close to the beginning of the hose and under-watered at the end of the hose. WATER AND MORE WATER! They should have been kept soaking wet from the day they were planted. It wouldn't stop some sunburn- but would have mitigated the damage. For the Howeas its going to be a slow recovery- years. The King palms are much faster..but the browned trunk worries me. That's a deep burn. I know it sounds like you watered often enough...but probably not enough or deep enough. A watering ring around those palms filled when watered and then re filled would help. You might as well cut off the dead fronds and start from there. Those are some of the best palms to grow..but the start can sometimes get off on the wrong foot in a hot summer. You might be happier to add more palms alongside now that temps will be going down so you have something nice to look at for now. It would be worth it instead of getting all frustrated waiting for those to recover. Best luck!

Westes: How sure are you that drip emitters work well on gritty mix? I mean true gritty mix with no peat or similar stuff in it. It is hard for me to believe that drip emitters will be able to wet the soil uniformly. If some plants seem to thrive in that situation, it is probably because they are happier with dry conditions. And I bet the root systems in that situation will have very skewed growth - either favoring the dry or wet portions of the mix. Plants will produce roots where they sense is the ideal condition. Gardengems: I agree that everyone should have the opportunity to explore and find out for themselves. In bonsai we have a saying that unless you have killed 100 plants you would not have learned the basics. I have probably killed way more than that. I teach science and engineering and one of the basic lesson is that successes do not teach you anything much - it basically says what you did worked. Whereas failures teach you a lot more if you are willing to find out why it failed. An expert is someone who can teach you why something will not work and the tell what to do to fix it. The rest is up to the person and has to decide what works for them.

Those of you that hate silks might want to just turn away. I have no idea on the drying but you made me chuckle. I could offer to send you some Dirtex the next time you want to clean it.

when my kids were little they watered the fake ficus i have a few times!!
yes, it will dry outside pretty quickly...i hose mine off regularly, tho i tilt it, but it still gets alittle wet-just leave it outside for the day!

I saw my Mom and Grammy this morning before I checked back and they both also said it would dry. I feel silly for posting this now.

Kelly - Haha, you crack me up!

The pot is plastic and normally sits in a different pot to hide it. The styrofoam seems to be glued in. I took the moss off and have it sitting on a plate inside to dry. I'm hoping that will help the rest of it air better. The leaves have been dry for hours now!

It's breezy here today but not real warm so hopefully it's good before I bring it in tonight.

I used to work with that stuff all the time. I never had need of this trick, it's for drying live moss in the microwave. Don't see why it wouldn't work to get rid of any little bit of moisture left in your moss so fuzzy mold doesn't appear. Perhaps just don't nuke it as long since it's already in dried form & not live? If that doesn't work, it's really cheap to just replace it. You can get a small bag at any hobby/craft store and use U pins or hot glue to secure it in place.

I wouldn't worry about the foam at all, but a hair dryer would probably remove any moisture left pretty quickly.

Shee, if you go to Walmart buy a can of Clean Safe Dust Remover...air in a can.

I use it on all my dried flowers, my chandy, and things that are too high that I can't reach. It's also great on keyboards and cleaning out the computer.

Do this once a week. It's fun to play with!
