Show me yours-tile and hardwood in the same room

We have a really small home, 832 sq ft. We bought it to sell it again, and we are making a masculine batchelor pad/couple's home (it fits the area well). We had an eat-in kitchen which wouldn't fit a table, and reasonable sized living room, so converting it to one very efficient room made sense. There are windows and a door on one end and we're putting french doors in the other end which open to a deck we're adding with another eating area (in effort to extend the home's useable space). An open floor plan on a lot with loads of trees. It's working, so far. So I am trying to connect the two rooms together visually. One is hardwood and one is vinyl. The kitchen floor is coming out completely. I want to do a path of hardwood from the livingroom all the way to the french doors. But to delinate the kitchen area, hubby wants tile in front of the appliances and sink. I think it'll work, but how does one marry the two surfaces?
