Wiring to an outdoor lamp post.

Here is my problem...I have an existing lamp post outside that trips the circuit breaker. There is no other switch in the house that powers on/off the lamp beside the breaker. I was told by a neighbor that the previous owner put the post in himself while the house was being built and before the concrete for the driveway and walk was poured. It does'nt look like conduit was used and I think a indoor grade wire was used. When I took the lamp post apart I discovered that the hot wire(black) was shorted to the bare ground wire. The neutral is not(when disconnected from ground at the breaker panel of course). My question is could I use the white wire as my hot since it is not shorted to the ground and use the black wire as the neutral? I know this is not code but I don't want to rip up alot of concrete to fix this. Any advice would be appreciated....The wife really likes the lamp post as it lights up our driveway.

Put in a new direct burial rated wife. UF - You can do it.
AC current goes back and forth in hot and neutral.

You wouldn't want to run out some saturday morning barefooted to discover your legs collapsing under you, and find yourself laying next to some kid with a death grip on a baseball in his hand.

I jetted a one inch pvc for a sprinkler system under a two car driveway, with a 14/2g UF taped to it hoping for a post light feed. Pretty quick and easy. Took two tries. That was a 30 yr old house with a huge maple tree next to the driveway that I thought for sure I roots were going to create difficulties.

You can try to neatly tape the wire and pull a new back under your driveway using the old. Work the old back and forth a bit from each side of the driveway to make yourself an easy pull that wont nick-up the new wires.

But yeah, it's not as hard as you might think to get a new wire under a driveway if you have reasonable accessibility...

I can't say whether this is kosher or not. I do know that I've seen post lights done with UF brought up the center of the post and wirenutted to the light with no box. Presumably the post serves as the box. I can't say for sure that those were legit installations though as I saw no pedigree for them. In your situation you'd need to follow the manufacturer's instructions. If they don't include any, I'd say at the very least you'd need a bushing on each conduit to protect the wires. But I'm neither a pro nor a code expert. I hope some of the pros will weigh in here.

If the electrician is using direct bury cable, the cable needs to still be protected from physical harm where it is exposed. He will probably put the cable into PVC conduit running from the bottom of the trench up along the side of the building and into an LB fitting, which passes into and through the wall of the building. If the cable is out of harm's way inside the building then the cable can run unprotected right into the panel. Also, the circuit running outside to the lamp post must be GFCI protected. He won't be able to install a GFCI breaker in a single panel slot. It will need a double slot. His alternative would be to hardwire a GFCI receptacle out at the lamp post with the lamp plugged into the receptacle. If that is not code allowed in your jurisdiction then he will have to install a subpanel near the main panel with a GFCI breaker.

Expect to end up hard wiring the lights. There are a lot of issues with solar for outdoor usage in the north. Check things like the operating temperature range for the battery. You'll want one rated for temperatures below zero. Also, don't be surprised if you only get a few hours of useful life from the lights each evening. Is it all right that they go off before 8 o'clock? A light for the portico is probably a better place to start. I'd look at a black flush-mounted fixture personally.
