Strugging Stepdad
My wife and I have been married for 5 1/2 years. We have two sons, 4 years and 11 weeks, and a 12 year-old stepdaughter from her previous marriage. Over the last two years, my stepdaughter has become increasingly angry and hostile toward me. The only apparent reason why she harbors such anger toward me is because I am not her "real" father, and she has fierce loyalty for her father, to the point where she builds him up to incredible sight in her eyes.
My wife is my stepdaughter's custodial parent, and she sees her father every other weekend, and at other times as well. Her dad is the type of person who tears others down to build himself up, and I'm certain this is what he has done with me. My stepdaughter has told me that her dad has told her she doesn't have to show me any respect whatsoever, because I'm just a "step" dad, and not her "real" dad. She does, however, apparently get along just fine with her father's wife, her stepmother...it just seems to be me that she consistently disrespects, and why not? Her dad has told her it's just fine for her to do so.
When my stepdaughter is with us, I try my hardest to make us all a family, but my stepdaughter tries her hardest to isolate my wife's attention and separate her from the rest of the family, as to push the rest of us....especially me....out of the way. I know she would prefer it if I were not in the picture at all, and she could have life the way she used to have it...with just her mom to herself, and her dad, although divorced, running things by remote control.
Unfortunately, I don't have the support of my stepdaughter's father to resolve this situation and help her to respect me, because this is exactly the situation he wants. He, unfortunately, craves control, and as much as I hate to say it, his daughter follows in his footsteps in that regard. We have been seeing a family counselor to try to resolve some of these issues, and my stepdaughter told the counselor, straight out, that she rules our house. My wife and I have told her that WE are the adults, and that WE make the rules, and she just scowls at us, no matter what punishment we levy against her. It's as if she just doesn't care. She has told us that someday, she will go and live with her dad, and my wife's ex has threatened to pursue custody several times, although we both know he doesn't have much of a chance of getting it.
Every time I deal with my stepdaughter, it seems like we're butting heads, or at least something negative. I'm taking away privileges for disrespect, or I'm threatening to take away privileges. My wife feels like she's caught in the middle sometimes, because my stepdaughter treats her differently than she treats me (a hell of lot nicer, that's for sure). Another six years of this is going to be fun (and I mean that entirely sarcastically) if we don't figure out how to get this under control somehow. My stepdaughter pushes buttons at every single opportunity. She either wants us to send her packing to her dad's (which we both agree is not in her best interest for reasons I won't get into right now), or she is determined to drive a wedge into our family, and I won't stand for that. I love my stepdaughter, but I also love my family as a whole, which creates a hell of a dilemma for me. Anyone else out there go through this? How did you cope? Any suggestions? Thanks!
