Bedroom Makeover

We desperately need to decorate our bedroom top to bottom. The only thing that I'm going to keep is the fake fireplace (it's amazing how real it looks - really) which is a traditional cherry and most likely the queen mattress and boxspring (we may go up to a king). So almost a blank slate. The fireplace will go on the opposite wall of the bed.

The room is about 14' square with an additional 4' of an an octogon that looks out onto our lake. We'll put floor to ceiling drapes in the octogon area and perhaps 2 bedroom chairs there to sit and look out, or place the chairs on either side of the fireplace (would look better but function worse).

We will place the bed on a 14' wall. I've included a link off the internet but think that the bed might be too big for the room. It definately has too much storage (all we currently use is 2 nightstands the rest is in the closet). We like things very simple and lean towards modern/contempoary.

Though the link is just off the web, it does have similiarities to our room (size wise). The wall the bed is on is close to the size our wall is. Where the windows are, ours only goes out another 4' and is in a 1/2 octogon shape. The picture looks like it's another 10' or so. It does give a reasonable pictorial though.

How does one know how much furniture is too much?

Would a bedroom ensemble like this just monopolize the room decor where it would be difficult to change it out for a whole new look? The king look proportionaly better.

Though we LOVE the view of the lake, it would be nice to have the bed be more of a focal point. It's got to be fairly eloborate to compete with the view.

Since we don't need nor want this much storage, do you have a better idea?

How is it possible to have too much storage, lol? It's not a problem I can relate too.

A large headboard and a beautifully dressed bed should make plenty of impact. But if you want a wall covered with furniture, why not use bookcases on the ends rather than the drawers?

Right now, people on CL are practically giving away the wall units they bought back when TVs were deep. I've seen some really beautiful sets for a fraction of what they would cost new. It seems to me one of those could easily be modified to make a bed surround.

Cindy, that's a great idea. We sold one ourselves several years ago that the middle part was adjustable for varying widths. I remember wanting to sell it mostly because I knew that it was an going to be an obsolete piece of furniture. We got a decent amount, now I see them go for free just to get the monstrosities out of the house. I'll start looking.

After you paint get a light kit for your fan or swap that one out for one that has a light. Or just find a pretty little chandy for over head. The alcove is a perfect spot for a dressing table or desk. The TV makes no sense where it is. I would just remove it all together. You need a bed, and two end tables with lamps. Will you need a dresser? Wall color is a very personal choice. Do you have your bedding chosen? Pull a color from there. More than that, furniture set up requires a drawing with measurements of the entire room windows/doors marked.

I think your ideas are great. You can use vectra. Itis a spray that keeps fabric easeir to clean. You can buy on amazon. I like mellow pink or soft white. Ikea has some large inexpensive chandeliers you might like.

Oh I hope someone answers you Aloha. I'm in the same predicament. The wall bed pic that you posted a link to, can I ask where you found that? What store is it from? This is exactly what I have been looking for. We have a king size bed in a very small room. I can only have 28" wide cabinets/dressers/towers whatever they are called on each side of the bed. What you posted would be perfect. Thanks.

I am a bit confused why you are looking at the wall bed if, as you say, you do not require the additional storage. It seems a very heavy look, though practical to store a lot of stuff in a small room. It doesn't look a very flexible solution esp. if you were to ever move. If you want a king bed, then I would focus on getting the size bed that you want and go simplier (less bulk) on the other pieces so the room doesn't look cramped. Add the two nightstands with lamps and a large picture (perhaps something that ties in with the lake theme) for above the bed. Linens as well as decorative pillows will soften the look and help make the bed into the focal point. When looking for beds, think about how the new furniture will go with the traditional cherry fireplace. If you want to mix things up a bit, you could consider an iron bed, upholstered headboard (a very popular look right now) and/or painted nightstands.

As for the chairs, I'm having a difficult time envisioning how they'd fit in the 4' octoganal space. A picture would really help!

I live in fear of clutter, so having a lot of empty storage space I don't need seems deadly--afraid I'd fill it up!

I love the clean lines of the platform bed in the photo but would go for one without the big furniture surround if I didn't need the storage. If I needed some storage, I'd go for a platform with the drawers under it--all those drawers around the head of the bed seem really heavy to me.

So everyone confirms the nagging feeling I was having that it's just to heavy for the overall room. I think it gave us much of what we wanted, a focal point, the "wood" was stained close to the fireplace and it was contemporary. I think I wanted it to work because I HATE shopping and this came the closest to anything else.

I am wondering now, if I've actually seen things that would work much better, but I'm just having a hard time putting it all together. I've seen several platform beds but they look so lackluster in the store. I'm thinking though it might be like the christmas tree in the forest that you cut down only to bring it home and it's the size of your livingroom.

Katlam, I found it at American Furniture in Colorado (afwonline). It's quality was something very questionable IMO. I had said to my DH that I'd be willing to pay more for a better built unit. As I said the "wood" matched. I put wood in quotes because it was very thin to particle board at best. We're pretty easy on our furniture though, so I was considering it. I posted another picture online that was much better then the stores. I now understand why it works for a small room that needs storage.

I still feel very lost as to putting all the pieces together. It's probably going to have to be one piece at a time.
