window treatment for metal door w/window

Ok, this is not a very glamorous problem or dilemma but still not sure what to do :) While we are living temporarily in our shop until our house is built we have 3 metal doors that have the windows in them; about 21"W X 35"H in each door. What can you get to cover them (besides garbage sacks:)?? One would think there would be something since you would have to drill or screw into the metal door.....Any ideas would be appreciated!

Magnetic curtain rods and kitchen window tiers. Or make your own curtains from an opened pillow case using the hem as the casing. If you don't sew or your machine isn't handy you can use fusable tape to hem them.
Wal Mart carries this type of rod for under fifteen dollars.

You can get curtains on rods that fasten to the top and bottom of the window frame. Or you may be able to fit tension rods between the sides of the window frame and not drill into the door. Other options involve drilling into the door. You can get miniblinds that you can fasten on top and anchor on bottom. You could do shutters (expensive). You can get a window shade.

In that window, to make it work for your husband and you and allow you to control the light, I would use wooden blinds that match the trim (and a shade lighter if you can't make it exact) with attractive tapes. I'd use very light-weight ones, and use the widest slats I could make fit, because it takes fewer of the wider ones per shade, which means that they stack up higher when you pull them all the way up. If that is appealing to you, from what I can see, you will need to add a header from which to hang them, so that they will clear the windows when open. That can be masked with molding stained to match. Some blinds have valances of molding available to match. And it also means measuring carefully from side to side, based on the spot at the top where they would hang, because every additional bit of distance out from the window means their width might have to be reduced a bit, so they will clear each other at the inside corners. (Am I making that part clear?) For the safety of your children, whatever treatment you choose, think about how to corral the cords so they can't get tangled in them.

I agree. I was thinking something with clean lines (no curtains). Would you do a shade on the door itself and a separate one for the adjacent sidelight? Or would you do a single shade across the door/sidelight opening (and you would have to raise it to use the door)?

You need local on site retail or design help. Call an HD dealer. There are many options far superior to metal blinds. They will also install.

We need pictures for sure I would suggest grommet drapes for wease of opening and closing but with sheers too you will need to have traverse set of rods which can add a lot to the cost . As for panel size you will need at least double the width of the window for the drapes and 3 x the width for the sheers.The window in this picture is 184” long not counting the the window to the right.I have a valance and grommet drapes they are about 2 1/2 times the width of the window frame. Where these are I never actually close them but on the other side of the room I do fairly often I find the grommets make quick work of opening and closing but as you can see my space is quite contempory so that casul feel of the grommets works. Without seeing your space it is hard to comment on type of material for drapes, mine are a silver taffetta and so quite lightweight and also the lighter the fabric the fuller they should be.

Or possibly some type of film that will let in light but obscure direct views. I've seen it at Bed Bath & Beyond, but I think there are other versions available at Home Depot and online.

Since you say living with these windowed doors is only short term temporary, go with the cheapest solution: RediShades. No hardware or complicated installation.

I got mine on sale at HD for $1.79 each. They don't leave any sticky glue behind when you decide to remove them. You can get them in paper (cheapest) or plastic, light filtering or room darkening, ect.

If you want something sturdier, functional, and not too expensive, check into magnetic roller shades. We had one on our back french door at our old house and it blended in well and worked great for privacy at night.

Not sure if this is the same brand we had, but it looks similar at least.
