Question about window treatment for large picture window

Hello,

I have a very large picture window(135 inches long). I would like to put stationary panels on each side of it. I am wondering how full they should be. I saw that Pottery Barn has some that are "double width", or 100 inches.

Do you think that would look full enough, or would it look skimpy?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

A single width would be skimpy-the double at 100" will look well balanced. Good choice.

So would that be 50 inches of gathered fabric on each side? 50 inches gathered is about 25 inches.

They will look like what they are - placed there to soften and give the appearance of drapes. If it were my room and l liked the drapes, I would give them a try.

I have a window that is about 114 inches wide (made up of 3 windows like yours), maybe about 54 inches long as well. I currently have wood blinds, outside mount, and I do NOT like them. I am going to replace them with curtains . . .I just need to sew them! Here is why I don't like them: (1) You will be getting 3 different blinds, one for each window. There is no guarantee that the blinds will match up perfectly. I called the co. to complain, and they said it can be off within a certain distance per their standards, and if it exceeds that, the would replace them . . .but it was within that range, so no. (2) Open, the outside mount doesn't look so bad. Closed, yuck! I think it looks messy. (3) On a large window, it's a whole lotta blinds going on. Very, very angular, a lot of lines. If you were going with an inside mount, at least you could put curtains up to soften the edges, but with an outside mount-- not so much. On mine, the blinds are connected to something that looks like moulding, so I guess you could put up a rod that projects past that for a valance, but like I said, with an outside mount, panels would be harder. Just my 2 cents. I know some people who visit LOVE my blinds, so who knows. When I got them measured, I had it done professionally. People will come and give you free estimates and do measurements then.

My kitchen windows are each about that size. I had nice wood blinds from Overstock, but found that blinds of that size are too heavy so I never pulled them up or down if I could help it. So DH would do it and always leave them crooked, so I had to adjust the heavy blinds. I switched to cafe curtains on rings and an outside-mounted rod and hung the rod 3/4 of the way up each window, instead of the more common inside-mounted 1/2 way up look which I think looks more country and would make my windows look squat. I love them - so much easier to open and close, and so much cuter IMHO than the blinds. The top of the window can still open most of the way if I want air flow while the curtains are closed. The link is an example of how mine look, except mine are hung 3/4 up the window and the link shows 1/2, and my windows are your size and over a kitchen counter, etc. I took mine down to paint the window trim, so no pics right now, sorry. I am not quite sure how big the skylight window is but I would use a motorized skylight shade. Here is an example - Motorized skylight shade on blinds.com There are a ton of companies that make the motorized shade so you can pick any material. I would use a cellular shade that was blackout in the skylight. With motorization, you can open and close the treatment as you need. For the window wall, I would also look at motorized shades. The question would be an aesthetic question - Do you want the shades to be on individual windows or do you want one long treatment on each vertical window grouping. Individual motorized shades would probably be nice because you could operate each window separately. Most of the motorization controls are built my Somfy. For the type of window treatment, cellular shades offer some thermal insulation, double cell is better than single cell. I am not sure if you want black out shades for these windows. Motorized shades options from blinds.com for example. One other options is to put the window treatments on the outside of the windows if your exterior permits. Take a look at Bandalux for some ideas. Thank you all! My most urgent needs are night privacy and cool temp insulation. I'm leaning towards drapes on the sides to soften the space and a blind in the middle to lower at night. As for all the wood, I agree, it's too much and I've been considering painting the built-ins. I'm just worried I won't like it afterwards and can't unpaint it. It's been a tough room to deal with altogether. I appreciate all the advice!! Please keep it coming!

I would take into account the width of your rod and the amount of wall space you have for the gathered fabric.

I have 100+" of drape on a slider and when pulled to one side it's a lot of fabric. I'm thinking 50", 25" when gathered, on each side may be what you need.

Decide on the width you want the panels to be when "open" and buy, at the very least, twice that width. If you're not wanting them to look as if they can be closed than a narrower panel can work. Since you're buying ready made I'd go with the double width. I'm sure they'll look very nice.

Thanks for the advice. I have ordered some swatches from Pottery Barn of their Peyton linen look drape. Hopefully one of the colors will work.

I also looked at Country Curtains but didn't see anything that had the linen look that i am seeking. Does anyone know of a good source for drapery panels with that are linen )or look like it?)

Marrilyn, have you thought about having them custom made by a local seamstress? This way you can chose the style and fabric. often getting them for far less than what you'd pay retail if you purchase the fabric on sale. Almost everyone I sew for purchases their fabric during the half off sales.
