Question

After spending six days with youngest SD (a 25 year-old adult), a few things happened and I'd like to get opinions or perspectives, please.

We took her to my DH's parents (out of town) to spend Thanksgiving. Just before we left, after my husband was out the door and she and I in the house alone, she told me that she had seen my mother a few weeks earlier and that my mother had been very rude to her.

A few months ago, DH's ex called and said "June's mother is being rude to SD". The phone was on speaker so I could hear her say this and I was flabbergasted. I did call my Mom later and talked to her about it and my Mom said she had no idea what she was talking about.

I also must say that this SD has made up stories in the past such as saying "so and so is being such a b*** to me" and they have not been true.

Also, SD made a huge point of running up to DH's distant cousins and said to them "this hug is from mommy - she sends her love". Keep in mind, the SD is 25 years old and her mother wasn't close to these people at all. She's also not been in the family for more than six years, so I'm sure everyone was kind of wondering where that came from.

Finally, on the way home she made an announcement that she didn't like the Christmas present we got her last year. In previous years I put a lot of time and thought into buying her gifts and each time she and her Mom took the gift back. That's ok but it was obvious I was coming up with things she didn't want so last year I purchased a gift certificate to a mall that she always goes to, so she would be able to buy anything she wanted at any store in the mall. I also got her a mildly fragranced wax sculpture candle.

On the way home, she makes a point of telling us she never goes to that mall so she hasn't used the gift certificate and she was really kind of irritated with us over it. She then tells me that the candle I gave her was so strongly scented that her mother threw it out. SD lives with her mother and her mother smokes a minimum of 2 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day, so I can't imagine her sense of smell is that delicate. Besides, I have one and SD loved it and the scent when she saw it at my house.

The final thing that was upsetting was I was visiting with my sister-in-law and she blurts out "ex-wife wants DH back". And then she stopped talking.

I think my sister-in-law kind of hit the nail on the head as to where SD is coming from.

I also couldn't help but note that ex sent my in-laws a Thanksgiving card (and they displayed it on the mantle) and she also called them on Thanksgiving day to wish them a happy one.

Any thoughts on this? I wasn't the cause of the divorce (not by a long shot). And this is the SD that I got along with so well, or so I thought. DH and I have been married 4 1/2 years.
