Pushing A__'s troubles under the rug... Again. Advice?

I could use advice:

A__ (FDH's 9yo son) told me the other day that his cousin says that A__ swallows, gags and calls him a d0uch3bag. A__ said this makes him sad and asked me what the words mean. I gave simple factual explanations and he was mad that his cousin calls him those things, but seemed relieved to get a straight answer.

Later, he brought it up again, and asked me to talk to his mom about it to see if she could get Cousin to stop (by talking to her brother and SIL). I suggested he talk to her, and he gravely said he couldn't. So I said dad or I would, but that he has to be mature and not call names back, etc etc, if he wants Cousin to be nicer.

He even reminded me this morning "Don't forget to talk to my mom!" So this is obviously bothering him.

I talked to FDH, who said that since A__ brought it up to me, and asked me to do it, that maybe I should talk to BM. So I did.

But she totally dismissed it, said it didn't matter, and that he was just looking for attention or trying to find out what a word meant.

Well, even if he's just trying to find out what a word means, FDH and I prefer he gets straight facts from us than playground misinformation.

If he was just looking for attention, he wouldn't have asked me to talk to his mom about it - and I pointed that out.

But I might as well have been talking to a wall.

So I talked to FDH after this phone call. I explained that I was worried that A__'s troubles are being ignored and if it's bothering him enough to ask ME to talk to MOM about it, then it matters.

We're worried that if BM ignores it, A__ will think it is futile to approach adults with his problems in the future.

FDH is going to talk to her as well, and I'm hoping he has some impact.

Have I done all I can? Can I do anything else to help him? Or would doing anything more be totally overstepping? (I think I'm toeing the line as it is)

How can we reassure him that he should keep coming to us with problems, even if we can't always help? (I was thinking of leaving him a note telling him that he can ALWAYS come to me or Dad about problems, even if they are tough to talk about, or embarrassing, or we might not be able to help)

Advice please! I'm really fumbling here.
