some smaller things

hi all,

so here is a link to my facebook photo album. i think (hope, really) that it will work. a lot of the pics are old but i just finished doing a small vase and some tiles. i think they're the first five pictures that come up.

i'm making the smaller tiles into a coaster set of 4 with a trivet (sp?). the vase i just found at work - i guess donations came in and none of the residents were interested b/c it sat out in the yard in the mud for a couple of weeks before i took it home.

i'm REALLY happy to be doing this again. i can't believe how much i missed mosaics. (darn job!..lol)

Thanks saypoint and misslucinda for the additional info. So do you think the boxwood on either side of the door would look okay? I think I am going in the right direction with the smaller items near the door and the larger rhodies at the corners of the house. Even as the boxwoods grow, the rhodies should stay a bit higher so that would give me the "V" look. I like the japanese holly, but actually think it might not grow enough to fill in the space. I have a slight slope and some exposed foundation I don't care too see (just grey cement). I actually don't mind the outdoor maintainance aspect of it since I consider this type of work my escape so trimming back the holly won't bother me much. I also don't usually "hack" away at things. - a little bit of clipping here and there once a year has always worked for me and I was hoping the hollys might look okay with this method? Any thoughts about my potential other plan to maybe do Holly on either side of the door (there is more room here to grow up) and than doing some boxwood between the holly and the rhodies. Just so you know - I do plan to add more to the front of these shrubs, but would like to get the background shrubs in first. Thanks!

We also have those native plants that insist on growing in the midst of another plant. We have grape, black berry, fig, poison oak. Because of the location you can not dig them out, nor spray them without damaging your favorite shrub. We have found a tool with a long handle and a sharp,very sharp hook on the end. Locate the offending plant at ground level and with a quick pull you will sever the growing stem. It will grow back, thats true, but you can do it again, and keep it under control if not eliminated. We are also using the mosquito repelling device called "off", that has a battery operated fan with a tiny vial of repellent that we hang on our clothing when we want to enjoy the garden at the same time as the mosquitoes. Sorry, I always assume people read for content. The content of the following quote from my post to the Who's Here thread should lead you to believe that I've been gardening for some time. "We have about an acre that generally slopes down to the south (ranging from southwest slopes to south-southeast slopes in direction) that I am slowly (oh so slowly) trying to turn into a food basket (so to speak)." Slowly (oh so slowly) suggests that I have already been working on it and that it is taking a long time, thereby suggesting that I've been working on turning it into a food basket for some time, which means gardening and horticulture (or more appropriately permaculture) experience. "Currently we have raised bed gardens to the tune of 100+ square feet, as well as currants, strawberries, gooseberries, blueberries, hazelnuts (new last year), nanking cherries (new last year), black walnuts (new last year), butternuts (new last year), and roses (for the rose hips). " If I've already got 100+ square feet of raised bed garden that would tell you at least one year gardening experience, the list of berries and nuts, specifying some this year (meaning I put them in last spring, that may have legitimately been misinterpreted to mean I was putting them in 2010 except I followed with a list of items to go in in 2010) would tell you I'd been doing those for at least two years. Sorry for not just saying I've been gardening this location for the past five years and gardening in general (on and off) since I was four years old and helped my mom in hers. I assumed that the list would let you know I have at least several years gardening experience in my current location. Regarding everyone trying to be helpful. I ask for specifics in finding things in the Denver area and someone replies (from the WA/ID area) with: "I have an idea of where you can go" followed by no other information or personal message, what do you think I'm supposed to think? We have a 99 cent store close to my house,and it was the first one of those types of stores to come to our area several years ago.I go there before i go to the grocery store.We have a freezer section,fresh fruits and veggies and almost anything you can find in a regular grocery store,and name brands as well.There fresh fruit has been great,pints of blueberries for .99cents,as well as strawberries etc and most of it grown right here in Calif. They recently got a new bread vendor and oh what joy that is,sour dough,multi grain,and several other great brands.It's the only place we buy saltine crackers now,they are made by Harvest Table or something like that and are just as good as premium and the other. I have been going there for years and have never found any outdated stuff.Love that store!!! Kathi

nope, not crash glass. those were glass coasters i bought at the dollar store - painted the backs and cut them up. i'd like to give crash glass a try some time though.

I love everything! The use of the bright colors is great. I have to get myself away from greens. I have been in a rut using one color on everything. I'll use you as an inspiration to start using some reds, purples and blues.

my favorite object is the number #23 dragonfly and favorite picture is #16...that's a great study in shadows..
it would be cool to paint as a still life study.

wonderful bunch of colors there, all around, with a fun flair.

I love the box (chest) you have been working on. I have liked that since the first day I ever saw it. Will love to see that completed.

Oh I like how if you scroll over your pieces you get a small narative about the piece, thats really cool!!!!

Don't think I've seen these before. Love how colorful and cheerful they are, esp love the disco ball! Am really envious of how good your swirls are, can't get those to come out swirly.
