Now this is what I'm talking about when it comes to decorating with wallpaper. If my bedrooms were only larger....

They don't even try to hide the TV which I like.

Wow, that's a neat concept - building a home with plans from 1800's, but with today's materials. Wish it were a hotel so I could go see it in person!

Under $30 roll is not difficult to find. There are some very nice papers available in that price range. Have a small space? Try eBay. Many times you can get high-end wallpapers in small quantities for only a little $$. I did that with a Thibault paper not too long ago (although I don't have it hung yet...LOL). If I were trying to stay in the under $30 camp, I'd go with traditional designs--damasks, toile, stripes...things that don't go out of style. Anaglypta and lincrusta papers are always interesting and not necessarily expensive--although hanging them can be a challenge! I am a HUGE fan of Bradbury papers. There's absolutely nothing more beautiful that a room full of their wallpaper. I have several friends who have used it and it's FABULOUS although pricey. They are now starting to manufacture some mid-century design papers that are way cool, too... Most notably, I love some of their new kitchen designs: They're just fantastic. I used a less expensive paper in my laundry/mud room. It's a toile and I only used it on one wall. It's much more fun that just a painted wall and adds so MUCH character to this old house (which originally had EVERY room papered). Wallpaper is great stuff. There's nothing like it for adding texture or interest to a room.

Thanks for all of the compliments and good wishes! I owe a lot to GW, so I wanted to show what can be done by "seeing" the layout function first. Also I used the new SW alkyd cabinet and trim paint. It is soap and water clean up when wet, but scrubbable after it cures. It levels very nicely. We used it on kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, and whole house doors and trim. (painters sprayed it on the areas they did. I laid on with a brush and laid off with a foam roller on the projects I did.) Tinker, the original back splash was very basic 4 x 4 "bathroom" style tiles in the same antique white as the formica. So they are kind of hard to see in the before pictures. The installer had to remove the old counters and lay down a new plywood base for the install on the counters. He removed the wall tile and I believe he only had to patch drywall in a few spots. There were also some drywall patches behind the stove area, as the 220 outlet had been removed by the electrician, and in the wall area where the original cabinet had been. It took the tile guy and plumber a week. He was a true pro and knew that the drywall patches needed to dry, that the tile needed to be set up before grouting etc. He was very proud of his cutouts by the electrical outlets, and we showed him the tiles we had to work with and asked for his input on the details. He came up with the diamond behind the stove. We like that because that tile, and the half round liner bar were leftover tile from our previous kitchen, so that made it feel like home. So the backsplash is the same porcelain as the counters in the main field, with the sesame colored liner bars, and the black running bond horizontal tiles.

Hope not! Then again, my daughter told me recently that I've got the exact same hairstyle now as some old school pictures she found of me, from 1969. I guess that means I like what I like and don't really care whether it's in or out. In our case we were dealing with a 9' x 9' bedroom (with 8 ft. ceilings) that had been turned into a poker room by the POs,complete with dropped ceiling. All the ceiling rectangles were cigarette and cigar stained, torn or punched through and there had been a leak in the roof which came in through that room and some of the rectangle ceilings had a terrible mold smell to them. Taking down that ceiling wasn't the problem. The problem came when we realized the POs used railroad spikes to anchor the ceiling tracks into the wall. Spend 2-3 weeks repairing the stucco all around the room or patch and do a temporary cover-up. We decided on the temp cover-up and other than changing the style of border a few times over the years, what was supposed to be a temp fix has been a permanent fixture for over 20 years. Actually, I can't imagine that squatty room without the border. It actually makes the room appear taller. Have no idea how that happens---optical illusion, maybe? As was said in an earlier post, I think border totally depends on the room itself---the style, the 'look' you are going for. If it works for you, the room, it's the look you want and you love the border, go for it! Here's our Temporary fix, 22 years later. Paintable Wallpaper Border

Jim, thanks for posting, as usual you have a treasure trove of pictures for us to enjoy. They are wonderful photos and it is such a touching story of their lives together. It is interesting to me that the room structure is relatively simple (basic box and rectangle shaped rooms). The crown moldings are stream lined and not over the top, The decor and interest (for me) comes from the art on the walls (love that the art is lighted, wonderful for mood setting), the beautiful layering of their collections, and the great wall colors used in the rooms to evoke cozyness and yet is still very sophisticated. I could totally live in those rooms.

It's absolutely gorgeous, but I'm curious why they did make small changes if you compare it to the picture of the original drawing on the front page (bottom rt) and I wonder if some of the wallpaper (i.e. dining room) would have had quite so large and 'flagrant' a pattern (tho' I know they did use large ones on occasion).

I can't imagine the construction expense. The scale is right so even if the inside were not decorated in a victorian style and the interior architectural details were executed in paint grade and simplified slightly (but still to scale), it would all still work.

It is interesting to see the construction cost breakdown-much less out there than it would have been here in the East. Lots of wonderful features-I love the button wall switches. The kitchen is wonderful and I would kill for that pantry and those floors-woodwork is amazing. However, 2.5 baths doesn't seem too practical for such a big house. I might have altered the plans some for that. Alas, I am not a person who could actually live in a Victorian-give me one of Wright's Prairie houses any day.

Fun to see though. Wonder if the sale price includes the furniture. Also, wonder why they aren't staying since they are losing money on the deal. Upkeep too expensive, maybe? Thanks for posting it Oakley.

Gorgeous house, but too sparse on landscaping. You cannot spend $2k on landscaping for a million dollar home. But that is easily rectifiable. I couldn't personally stand to live in a Victorian, but I appreciate the beauty of the details.

LOL Thanks oaky :) It's a lovely home, and I actually have spoken (via posts on an old house forum) about their home :) The wallpapers are all historically correct and they did do as much detail as possible but had a few issues they had to deal with budget wise they simplified. I'll have to send them an email and ask why they are selling.

I know they did it for the adventure though. To see if they could replicate a victorian well. Their attention to detail is fascinating when they talk about it.

I can't imagine living in a new victorian :oP But it is a lovely home and I'm sure will sell quickly.

Ya'll make me giggle. I would have said I couldn't live in a victorian a few years ago as well...and here I am sitting at my victorian desk in the big victorian box :oP I couldn't be happier, but much of the joy of this victorian is that it's a victorian....I'd miss the history if it wasn't present.

Igloo, I could handle living in this new Victorian. Makes me wish they built new homes with this much character.

I hope in my next lifetime I get large bedrooms where I can do wallpaper like they did. Don't need a Victorian for that!

Question for you which I've been thinking about. When you're home alone at night, do you get scared? hee. I've always wondered if I'd be a scardy cat if I were alone in one at night time, because of all the archectitual detail.

Absolutely gorgeous, but If I wanted a Victorian, I would want the real deal, but has been renovated~~aka plumbing/electricity/etc. ;o)

Patty that's why we purchased this one. The electrical and plumbing are all new (ok ish) which is way easier than dealing with redoing things like wiring yourself!

Oaky :oP No I don't get scared, despite the stories and the size (it was once a hospital for women and many people have died here, including in our bed) :OP There are no creepy feelings, cold spots, nothing like that. I talk to the house, just in case :) Asking them to be nice because making me scream my freaking head off would scare the crap out of our son LOL And so far so good.

I will admit to researching the house and any others we were going to purchase to look for haunting stories. This one had none. It was a bonus. I'm all for another life cycle out there...but I just don't want to chat with them until I'm in that cycle myself LOL
