Faux Van Gogh Glass for mosaics

Can anyone give me instructions including a list of supplies I'll need to make faux Van Gogh glass, I was reading a little something about the how to online but lost my place and can't get all the info I need to do it. Thanks so much.

Welcome to the forum, FREE2: The way I did it was: on a sheet of textured clear glass (glue chip it's called) I painted the textured side black first - then gently wiped it off, leaving the black acrylic paint in the texture. Then I painted w/acrylic a hot, brilliant color - two coats. Then I painted it black again. Then I cut the glass on the smooth side into tiles. Beware - it doesn't store well - scratches, and if you get it wet, the paint peels, so keep it dry and separated. Also when breaking the tiles apart, be careful of the chipping around the edges - it's not too noticeable. When I used the metalic emerald green, it was hard to tell the difference in the faux and the real. It opens up all kinds of possibilities on colors that one can't find in regular stained glass - hot pink - purple - metalic gold etc. I love the metalic acrylics. I think you'll love the possibilities.

I also have done it pretty much like slow ,except I only do one coat and spray pant the back with black or clear kinda saves it some.There is so many possibilities .Another way I have done is with inks any kind then it does not pill at the back .I used the black like slow then uses inks and sprayed the back with clear.Just play around you only have pant to loose you can always wipe it off if you do not like it.

This post happened at the perfect time...I have been busy the last week tumbling broken dishes along with some glass tiles that I had ordered awhile back. I learned the hard way that Van Gogh glass should NOT be tumbled unless you want the paint to come off it. I only tumbled it 20 minutes but that was long enough to ruin it all. An expensive lesson for sure. However, now after reading and seeing Slow, Bama and Maria's faux glass attempts and liking the results I am going to try my hand at duplicating Van Gogh glass too! Oh BTW..I WILL NOT BE TUMBLING IT!!!! LOL Barb

Here is the link for Slow's faux Van Gogh glass. Basically, you are painting layers of paint onto the textured side of clear glass which makes a much cheaper version of Van Gogh glass. Then you can nip it and use it in projects with the painted side down so it won't scrape off when you grout. Better to use on indoor projects, outdoors it could fade. I wasn;t trying to mislead you girls but the Copper van faux is mine the purple one IS van gogh glass that I put next to it for comparison. Im sorry if I mis lead any of you. This is what I had clipped from slowmedown back in July -Hope this helps you all!!! SHADES: By dry application on the first part is: Brush the whole sheet w/black paint, w/paper towel, wipe off so that only the texture shows in black - you know - like when you faux-finish walls - you put the dark on, wipe off to leave the shadows of the dark. Then paint w/your regular colors - metallics are fabulous. Then, there are the iridescent enamels - do the same but I used two coats of that. The last coat is another black. On the gold leaf tiles, mentioned in BAMA's thread, I put the adhesive on, then gold leaf, then the red basecoat that is recommended UNDER gold leaf for the old world effect, then a coat of black. ROSIE was just here, and she said the faux Van Gogh looks so authentic. We can't tell the difference in the ones we bought and the ones I made. In fact, the purple looks like the same shade of paint. She said "poor Maria - just lost customers". Seriously, I'll never BUY Van Gogh again. It's so satisfying to DIY. I'm making this up but I'll just bet that's how the VG is made - paint on textured glass then baked on. Now I know how I'm gonna treat a concrete pig I've had sitting out back for more than a year - PINK VAN GOGH w/purple accents.

Let me try to answer the questions, and hopefully explain my reasons for asking the question. from shrty411 What did you have in mind? Something closed for only the invited or something closer to what we have now where newbies can find us? My idea was something more along the lines of this type of forum. Something with a forum broken into topics that make things easy to find, and a gallery. The site would be easy enough to locate, because the domain would come up on searches under the mosaic heading. All people would need to do is register to reap the benefits of the site. The purpose of the gallery for images would be for each member to have their own gallery, and be able to post their pictures to the posts they make. Everything would be on the one site, and would stay their as long as the site is there. We would not have to worry about things disappearing. The pop-up advertising would be no more. That is something that bothers me personally. As for posts of inappropriate material, I really see no issue with that with the idea I'm proposing. Usually that problem occurs on the larger sites for the most part. Hope this better explains what I'm thinking. If not please ask any questions. Lastly, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with GW, just there maybe a better way for the mosaic artists to come together to share our art, and any other stuff we may be doing.

Hey...thanks so much for your help. I am going to try this tomorrow. I have some glue chip that is in a box of scrap that was given to me. Yay! I am so excited! I love doing stuff like this. especially when I don't have to spend a bunch of cash to do it. Thanks again..I will post again and let you know how it went.

Look forward to seeing pictures of your results. Yep - it's a lot cheaper than ordering the VG and paying the postage. Everything I've done is from experimentation.

Always happy to "show off". Following is a link to my Photobucket albums. My recent project was the birdbath. I just finished grouting the tall flower that w/accompany the two that are in place. My yard man w/set this one in place tomorrow. They are made w/diamond metal lathe/concrete w/mixed mosaics, and can be viewed in "My Queendom" album.
