What type of glazing putty to use with an IGU?

I am making some insulated glass storm windows. I'm ready to insert the IGU into the wood frame but not sure the best way to do this. I've read you don't use the white putty- like glazing compound as you would on a single piece of glass in a wood frame.

I'm first going to put some thin, flat glazing tape which will sit between the glass and the wood frame. The tape I'm using is 1/8" thick and 3/8" wide.

After I put the insulated glass against this tape, how do I hold the glass unit in place? What I'd do with a single piece of glass is to use the push points and then apply a layer of glazing putty such as Dap 33.

I assume its ok to use the metal push points with an IGU but the bigger question is what type of glazing compound do I use to finish it off and hold the glass in place?

Most all insulated sash and units that i have scene are held on place with silicone caulk of a high quality

Hiya Hollywood, welcome back!

From the picture looks like nice work on the storm window, although how tight is the IG in the sash? You want to leave a little bit of "wiggle room" in there because both the glass and the wood is going to expand and contract depending on weather conditions. If you are in SoCal, then it won't be as drastic as some areas, but there will still be some movement.

Also, I would suggest using glazing blocks or small spacers between the glass and the wood as well to keep the edge of the glass from touching the wood. If the glass and wood do touch, it might not be a problem, but it could be since wood will carry moisture and that moisture could transfer to the IG unit via a bit of capillary action and it is possible that the moisture could affect the IG long term.

And I am very curious how you ended up building the IGU.

Typically, IG's are held in place using wood stops on both sides of the glass - one fixed and one removeable.

The manufacturer may use glazing tape, glazing putty, silicone, or whatever between the stop and the glass to seal the glass to the wood. Glazing tape is very common on the fixed side and silicone or putty is more common on the removable side.

I am assuming that the glazing tape that you used is two sided? It sticks to the glass and the fixed stop? If so, then the IGU will be held securely in the frame no matter how you do the other side. If it is one side sticky and the sid touching the glass isn't the sticky side, then you would have to make sure that the removeable side is secure of course.

If there is room, I would use a wood stop and silicone. If there isn't room for a wood stop then I wouldn't have an issue with using glazing points and window putty like you would use in a single pane - again keeping in mind that you want to keep the edge of the glass (IGU) off of the wood.

Well... I'm a minority of one here... 37 years ago I started on our old house & I'm still going. I've done pretty much everything myself (yes, up to code) so I know what I've done in the past and how it's held up. Wood filler absolutely does not last under outside paint. Period. (The book "Wood" might be a good starting point to explain why.) Basically, wood moves. Filler does not. Starting to see the problem here? I did it and after 10 years or so it started falling out.. oops. Yes, caulk works. But you have to keep applying thin layers forever to get around the shrinkage problem. DAP used to have an elastomeric filler... it was basically thick caulk, so the shrinkage problem was still there, but not as hard to build up. Wood glued in place is probably ideal, but it can be hard or impossible to get a piece that fits the damaged portion tightly. Use an aliphatic resin glue (yellow wood glue) - it gives a little so it can handle the wood shrinking and expanding. You can try a thin layer of caulk for better adhesion, followed by filler immediately, while the caulk is wet. The layer of embedded caulk gives enough it may keep the filler from coming loose. Whatever you do, you need to apply a layer of wood hardener first if the wood is weathered- ie. gray. At that point the lignin- the glue that holds the wood fibers together- is gone, so whatever you put in the hole will come loose, still attached to those weak wood fibers. Lacquer-based hardeners (Minwax) work ok; if you want it to be as strong as the original wood, use epoxy that's made for the purpose (Abatron). It's thin so it soaks into the wood nicely and leaves it stronger than the original. Then fill. Good luck! And the guy who said wood filler would come loose... he was dead on.

What color are your countertops? Depending on what color they are, I think you could do a terracotta type color, but be careful with your kitchen table and chairs, which appear a little orangey on my monitor. I have "orangey" furniture in my dining room (natural cherry) and chose to paint the walls a pale creamy terracotta color (it's BM Aura, I think the color is 'Milk & Honey'). You could also take the next-lighter color on the same 'chip' as BM Dijon, or maybe two steps down, and use that color. I don't have my paint deck with me to see what those colors are. But what I'm thinking is that it doesn't have to be a "new" color -- could be a variation on another color you already have. Again, I don't have my colors here, so I don't know how any of this would play out with the Northampton Putty (is the living room open to the kitchen?).

I would go with what the Simonton Rep says. That sounds about spot on as you can always lay down a slightly thicker bead of silicon to re-seal the IGU to the sash prior to re-installation of the glazing bead. There should be more than enough width behind the interior stop on the glazing bead to hide the 1/8th of an additional inch behind the stops.

Museum Putty used to be called Earthquake Putty. They changed the name to make give it a more positive outlook. And museums do use it. It's specifically for securing items on shelves, pedestals, etc., to keep them from "walking" during earthquakes. There's also Museum Gel. I don't know if Museum Wax is from the same company. The gel is totally transparent and is for securing glass. It remains kind of liquid, and oozes out under the weight of the item. At work, we had an expensive crystal piece get a big chip off a corner while we were removing it from a glass shelf with museum gel in between. Usually, you can just twist and it'll come up, but it had been there about a year and a half, and one of the guys used brute strength. There surely might have been a subtler way to part them safely. I have a bunch of wood and ceramic bowls stuck on high shelves with museum putty. We've only had minor quakes since, but they haven't moved a bit. The whole point of this stuff is that it works and doesn't cause damage (sans overenthusiastic guy muscles). I wouldn't substitute mounting putty. It's just for keeping frames straight while you're dusting.
