Should I bleach my wood?

babes

I have a vanity made of poplar and I am having a problem getting consistent staining (we probably shouldn't have chosen poplar, but it is too late now). I have sanded the wood and used a Sanding Sealer before staining. The sealer works great because it makes the wood less grainy and gives me more control over color and consistency. When I put my stain on a sample piece, it looked wonderful. However, when I went to stain the drawer fronts, they turned out blotchy, streaky, and inconsistent. The wood looks like it has yellow undertones in spots. All of the fronts also look different from each other. I have sanded everything off and started over, trying gel, water, and oil-based stains but I get the same results. I have read that 2-part wood bleach causes the wood to loose its luster, but would it be a good idea in my case since I will be staining it anyway? I am trying to avoid painting the wood. I am at wits end! Thanks for your help in advance!
